Azure Media Services: What is the limit on simultaneous connections?

What is the limit on simultaneous connections? I mean, how many people can be connected to a live event?

There's not a specific number. A similar question could be, "how many people can visit my website". There's a lot of factors to consider. The main ones are related to bandwidth and ability to scale. For Azure Media Services this means primarily:

  • The type of streaming endpoint (Standard or Premium).

  • The number of scale units if Premium.

  • Whether or not a CDN is used.

  • CDN optimizations that are set.

The CDN can provide significant caching and request consolidation with live streams. With on demand content there is generally less opportunity to cache content since clients are not all watching the same thing at the same time like with live streams.

See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/media-services/latest/stream-streaming-endpoint-concept for more information on Media Services streaming endpoints.

Endpoint Type: Premium
CDN: Yes

I am studying the possibility of using the service to make the live stream of the programming of a radio. Our expectation is a maximum of 20,000 listeners.

The service would be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

That should be easily achievable. We've done millions of viewers for the Olympics, World Cup and Super Bowl through the service using Premium Streaming endpoints and the proper CDN configuration.

If you would like to follow up off forum I recommend contacting David or myself to help with the settings on the CDN side. The CDN optimizations are the important parts for scaling properly.
