There is NO physical dvd/cd-rom drive in my system but I am getting such error:

Event 7026, Service Control Manager

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

cdrom

Read about deleting 'Upperfilters' and 'Lowerfilters' entries, but there is neither to be removed.  These are what I have:

    Can you check the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\cdrom

    At that registry key, in the right window, try changing the value data of Startto 3

    That would change to startup state to "Manual" which I believe would be the default if there is no DVD/CD ROM.

    The value data of Start may have been changed to 1 when the USB DVDROM was connected.

    There is some general info in the following link on changing the "service state":

    Hi Cedric,

    -      Since when are you facing this issue?

    -      Did you make any changes to the computer before this issue started?

    However, you may use the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter built in windows 7 and check if it helps you fix the CD / DVD drive issue. For more information about how to open this troubleshooter in Windows 7, visit the following link and follow the steps.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Open-the-Hardware-and-Devices-troubleshooter

    Also you may check if the drive is detected in device manager.

    To open device manager follow the steps below:

    1. Click on start.
    2. In start search box type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
    3. In the device manager window, check for the CD /DVD drive.

    Hope this helps. Let us know the results.

    Thanks and Regards,

    @Srinivas R

    Sorry, I probably misled you.  I thought it would be clear enough if I emphasized "Nonexisting CDROM..." in the topic header, followed by "There isNO physical dvd/cd-rom drive in my system..." in my first sentence.  I wonder how I should have put it, to not mislead you to reckon that I actually have a cd/dvd drive not detected.  Thank you for your kind efforts.

    Hi Cedric,

    • Who is the computer manufacturer and what is the model number?
    • Is it a Laptop or a Desktop?

    If I get this right, the CD / DVD drive is attached to your computer and the same is not been detected in Windows. Also you are unable to see the Upper filter and lower filter in registry for the CD /DVD ROM.

    If the above scenario is true, you may follow the steps posted by me earlier and let us know the result and check if the CD /DVD drive is detected in Device manager.

    Also you may contact the computer manufacturer and access BIOS to check if the CD drive is getting detected in BIOS.

    Also let us know if you have any third party CD DVD burning software installed on your computer.

    Please revert back with the required information.

    I am sure anyone reading this thread is already quite amused, by the fact that, alongside Microsoft Windows 7, a Microsoft Support representative also keeps assuming I have a cd/dvd drive not detected, whilst I did emphasize, then reiterate, that my computer has NO cd/dvd drive.

    @Srinivas R

    Sorry, but the scenario you assumed is not true.  The fact is, NO cd/dvd drive is attached to my computer, meaning that there isNO cd/dvd drive there available for detection by Windows 7.  I do not expect Windows 7 to keep trying to load any "boot-start or system-start driver(s)" for some nonexisting cdrom, then keep complaining that it "failed to load".  I reckon this is a Windows issue, and do not believe the hardware manufacturer name or model number makes the slightest difference.  To complete the picture as you required, the BIOS detectsNO cd/dvd drive, which is absolutely correct, as there is NO cd/dvd drive connected.  Also, there is NO cd/dvd burning software installed on my computer.  Thank you again for your kind efforts.
