Disable Virtualisation Based Security, but how?

GDay All,

I have an AMD based PC running Windows 10 Pro and I recently installed WSL & WSL2 and since that time, I am unable to run Ryzen Master.

Whenever I start Ryzen Master I get the following message:

"Ryzen Master can only run with Virtualisation Based Security (VBS) disabled in the Windows operating system. Please disable VBS and re-start Ryzen Master."

The only problem is, every attempt to disable VBS that I have found so far, the setting is either not enabled or has never been configured. I don't have the reported Registry entries, the Hypervisor has not been enabled/installed and none of the settings in gpedit have been enabled or configured.

I do have SVM enabled in the BIOS, but that is required to run VirtualBox and/or VMware Workstation.

I removed WSL & WSL2 as best I could, but that did not change anything and I'm not sure if I actually removed everything correctly. There were some commands that simply failed, even though they probably shouldn't have.

I also added EnableVirtualizationBasedSecurity to the registry, but that did not help either.

I should also say that Ryzen Master works on my vanilla install of Windows 10 (I dual boot) without any issues and I have not installed WSL there at all.

Anyone have any suggestions in regards to how to solve this issue?

My Computer Specs are:

AMD Ryzen 9 3900x

ASUS ROGStrix x570-E Gaming

32GB Ram

Windows 10 Pro version 2004 build 19041.264 installed on the 19-Jun-2020.

    Thanks Antonio,

Yes, this issue only occurred after I installed WSL & WSL2, prior to that Ryzen Master was working.

I still find it strange that none of the settings that are supposed to enable VBS, are actually enabled and yet VBS appears to be enabled anyway.

As you can see in the image below, taken from the System Information app, VBS is running.

For comparison, this is the same System Information as shown on my vanilla install of windows:

If you have any ideas on what settings etc. I should check, they would be most appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply Antonio.

Yes I did add the registry entry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceGuard and set the value to zero.

I do NOT have to disable SVM, as I have it enabled when I dual boot into my clean install of Windows 10 and Ryzen Master does indeed work in that configuration.

This leads to me believe that there is some registry entry that is set to enable VBS and it is most likely related to installing WSL. The only problem is, I do not know which registry entry or where to find it.

    Hello trumpy81,

I am Antonio, a Microsoft Community independent advisor, a Windows 10 and Microsoft office user like you. I hope I can help you on your concern.

Did you add the EnableVirtualizationBasedSecurity in this registry location?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceGuard and add a new DWORD value and set its value to 0.

You need to disable SVM in the BIOS but it will affect your Virtual Box and VMware.

    Can you try to:

    1. Disable SVM in BIOS then run Ryzen Master then do overclocking changes in your PC.
    2. After you do changes in Ryzen Master, you can enable back the SVM in BIOS so that you can use Virtual Box and VMWare.

You're response is highly appreciated. Please let me know if the issue is fixed, if not, we will find another way.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

    Keep safe always.

    Sincerely,

    Antonio
