Taskbar problems kb-5003214

Hi,

After installing kb5003214( build 19043.1023) the taskbar went nuts on one of my units, a Surface Book 2. The Lenovo desktop survived.

Sytem icons are there at start up but as soon as starting any application they disappear.

Pinned app icons stay as they should.

After a while the system icons re-appear but then doubled with copies of the pinned icons on top. These disappear when hoovering with pointer, and after a short while also the system icons are gone again.

Any good suggestions on this one?

Have removed the update.

Running on Insider, now on OS19043.985

    You will see this if:

    • KB5003214 is installed
    • News and Interests on the taskbar is turned off, and
    • Your DPI scaling (Settings|System|Display|Scale and layout is other (larger?) than 100%

Change any one of those, and the problem goes away. I found the most useful option to

be uninstalling KB5003214. I have zero interest in the News and Interests widget.

This problem not only persists with the June patch Tuesday update (KB5003637), but it now extends to 20H2 and 2004 in addition to 21H1. As if that weren't bad enough, this is no longer an optional update. If you uninstall it, it automatically re-installs itself unless you shut off automatic updates completely.

KB5003637 is supposed to be a security patch. New features, let alone ones that don't work and

break things that do, have no business being in a security patch!!!

You can uninstall KB5003637 and then block its re-installation using wushowhide.diagcab, but that's a lousy solution. You'll be missing the security patches in that update.

This has been always like this - if the optional quality update isn't installed, the next patch Tuesday contains the quliaty update fixes+security updates.

Windows 10 update servicing cadence - Microsoft Tech Community

    • The “C” and “D” releases occur the third and fourth weeks of the month, respectively. These preview releases contain only non-security updates, and are intended to provide visibility and testing of the planned non-security fixes targeted for the next month’s Update Tuesday release. These updates are then shipped as part of the following month’s “B” or Update Tuesday release.

"News and Interests" is a new feature introduced in the optional 21H1 - a FEATURE update. "News and Interests" is NOT a quality update nor a security update. Yet there it is now on 20H2 and 2004 after KB5003637, introducing new problems in those releases that did not previously exist. That's just poor release management.

The recent optional cumulative update KB5004476comes with the same taskbar corruption.

Yes! Agree, Microsoft has still not fixed it. So disappointing.
