Is There a Way to Prevent Copilot from Pausing When She Detects Input? (Voice Mode Issue)

Hello,

I've been using Copilot's voice mode and have come across a recurring issue that affects how she functions in my setup. Whenever she's speaking, she detects any sound (including my own voice) picked up by the microphone and stops speaking immediately. This happens even when it's her voice being played back through my speakers, causing an unintended feedback loop where she interrupts herself repeatedly. It becomes quite difficult to understand what she's saying since she pauses so frequently.

I understand that this feature is likely meant to avoid overlapping voices or interruptions, but in setups like mine, where I use a combined speaker and microphone, it becomes problematic. I've tried adjusting the input volume of my microphone and moving the microphone as far from the speakers as possible. However, these attempts haven't worked effectively: either she can't hear me, or the issue persists. I've also tried quickly muting my microphone after I finish speaking, but I'm not quick enough to prevent the interruptions.

Is there any way to disable or adjust this feature so that she can continue speaking uninterrupted, even when the microphone picks up sound? I'd greatly appreciate any advice or solutions you can offer.

Thank you for your time and help!

Hello, thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community. I'm here to help with your questions or issues.

Are you running Copilot via Edge (web-based) or inside Windows 11's native Copilot shell?

But from what you say, this is actually how Copilot is designed to work. Adjusting your microphone placement won’t solve the issue, the Copilot voice system expects completely clean input without any echo. Since it doesn’t have built-in echo cancellation or full-duplex control, it will keep cutting off when it detects feedback.

If you want smooth, uninterrupted responses, the best thing is to run Copilot on mute and use text input instead or switch to headphones to avoid feedback altogether.

Hi! Thank you for your response. I am using it from the built in Copilot app. Unfortunately don't always have access to my headphones which is why I requested help here. Thank you!

No worries, Peter, I get what you're saying. I also used Copilot with my laptop’s open mic before, and in my case, I didn’t have interruptions. But that’s only because of the built-in noise suppression. That’s why I’d recommend using headphones instead, any little noise it picks up could trigger it.

    I'm having the same issue.

I think it's pretty silly for an "intelligent conversational AI" to not be able to understand it's hearing itself when it's generating voice output.

It renders the entire idea of trying to converse naturally with CoPilot completely pointless.

Is Microsoft working on better echo cancellation within Copilot? This does not look good towards Copilot considering the same mic/speaker combination works PERFECTLY when using ChatGPT.
