KB5053656 won't install - "Something didn't go as planned"

My Windows 11 PC has had KB5053656 queued to install for weeks however upon every attempt the install will fail and roll itself back after displaying the ""Something didn't go as planned" message.

I've tried the usual steps - DISM, SFC and a Windowws 11 reset (while retaining my files and settings).

I've also tried running the Windows Update troubleshooter however that returns an error saying the diagnostic failed to run. To remedy that I've tried steps to reset the update cache file. Those steps went off without issue however I'm still not able to run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

Is there any advice on what to do with KB5053656 for those who can't run it?

Any advice on how to run the Windows Update troubleshooter also appreciated, thanks.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

    CBS.zip link:

My current W11 version is 26100.3194. I recall I tried installing KB5053598 (both via Windows Update and manually) and had the same '"Something didn't go as planned" rollback.

    Please uninstall Malwarebytes anti-malware.

Additionally, use the MBAM support tool to remove traces of Malwarebytes/. https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039023473-Uninstall-and-reinstall-Desktop-Security-with-the-Support-Tool

Restart Windows and install the pending updates.

Note: The above suggestion is for the OP's system based on their supplied logs. The fix may not help other users. If you're facing a similar issue, start a new thread and post your CBS logs there.

Since the KB5053656 update is optional ("Preview" updates are non-security updates), you can turn off preview updates and wait for the March cumulative update, which will be released on the ________ of this month.

To turn off preview updates, click Start, Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Next to "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available", set the toggle to Off.

Get Windows updates as soon as they're available for your device - Microsoft Support:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-windows-updates-as-soon-as-they-re-available-for-your-device-cad7b32b-001e-435b-9110-f18309b54168

Also, run "winver.exe" and post the OS build number. Ensure the March 11, 2025—KB5053598 (OS Build 26100.3476) update has been installed.

If you want to install the preview update anyway, please upload your CBS logs to OneDrive and share the link here. To collect the CBS logs, open admin PowerShell and run:

    GCI -Path 'c:\windows\logs\cbs\*.*', 'c:\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log' | Compress-Archive -destination (join-path ([environment]::GetFolderPath('Desktop')) \CBS.zip)

It saves the CBS and the setup logs to a zip file on your desktop. Share it on OneDrive or GoFile.io and post the link here.

Thanks for your reply. This worked. Thanks also for bringing the MBAM support tool to my attention. Good on Malwarebytes for publishing a tool that make a quick uninstall/reinstall extremely quick and simple.

Glad to have helped. MBAM can be installed after the quality update is installed.
