Windows 2004 update issues with SMBv1 mapped drives

For one of my clients, I have noticed an issue occurring across a several computers as they receive the update causing the computer to slow down and be come unresponsive and lock up, some desktop icons showing the blank page(including google chrome) and windows explorer stop responding. Its possible to restart windows explorer, but it eventually locks up again.

For all these computers they have one thing in common, a mapped drive to a windows 2003 server supporting SMBv1. When trying to navigate to this drive on windows explorer, it completely crashes windows explorer which requires task manager to restart it.

After removing this mapped drive(difficult because of the locked up computer) the computer began to behave normally. As a work around to get the users access to this drive, I have them RDP to a Terminal Server running Windows 2012 R2 which has no issues connecting this drive share.

    Hi,
According to your description, firstly I recommend you install SMB1.0 manually in your windows 2004 machine, see if it can work probably.
For how to install SMB1.0, you can refer to the following link:

If it does not work, in the machine you already mapped drive, try navigating Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Network\Drive Letter in the Registry Editor, (in my case, Z stands for Drive Letter), then create REG key as ProviderFlags, and set the value data for 1.
For how to do so, you can refer to the following link:

If you have tried both methods and still cannot fix this problem, then you may upgrade your machine to a newer server version, like Windows server 2016.

    Best Regards,
