I already have edge installed, there must of been edge updates in this update because i tried opening edge while updating and my screen froze couldn't do anything so i had to force shutdown and start the download again.

This is what just worked for me. My Edge browser was uninstalled so I downloaded the setup here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge After installing, I opened command prompt with Admin Privileges (easiest by right clicking start menu) Then I ran the following prompts: sfc/scannow DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth Reboot after completion, then install the update and reboot again before you can uninstall Edge again and be DONE. Same issue here. All "edge" browsers eradicated from the computers. The update gets to 97% and then says it can't complete and unwinds the whole monthly update.

Why would a failure of some add on junk browser install, cause the important OS updates to fail? Browser are add on applications - not core OS components.

This update system gets more broken every month.

Update: I went through the registry again and re-eradicated any key / value reference to the words MicrosoftEdge. This seems to have convinced the 21-05 update to complete its tasks fully. Of course it reinstalled new Edge, which I immediately uninstalled.

Same problem...did you just delete all the MicrosoftEdge entries from the registry ? I am not very experienced with registry manipulation and would not like to screw up something :-)

Seriously, I am paying MS for the license to use Win10 and instead of a useful product I get an operating system that fails to update every month if I do not accept their stupid browser that I never asked for. Pushing a browser would be bad enough even in a free software, but for a paid software like Win10 it is inexcusable. Quit playing your stupid browser games and start delivering a service I paid for. Every month I have to go through the same thing over and over again. I am NOT reinstalling Edge.

Update #2:

I read this elsewhere, and have confirmed it with another computer. You do NOT need to reinstall Edge to get this update 21-05 to install fully. The issue is the remaining directories after the last un-install of Edge, prevent the next Edge installing and completing in this 21-05 update.

Example.

Edge installs into:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\<some version number>\Installer\

When you un-install it with:
setup.exe --uninstall --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall
it leaves the directories in place.

You must manually delete the directories created and used by Edge so only this remains
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\

That's it.

Wow. So before applying May patch Tues you can delete the 'edge' directory if you have already uninstalled it.
(thank you RossHemingway). The monthly updates should apply without issues. BUT Edge is now installed again and you have to uninstall it. Is this a clear indication that Microsoft quality control is lacking?

Thank you. Helped for me. Just deleted Edge folders which blocked update and then KB5003173 was successfully installed.

But need to delete Edge Browser again. Not a big problem :)

I agree. I am not deleting the empty Edge folders because I don't want Edge. But now the monthly updates do not complete, either. This is inexcusable on Microsoft's part. We should not be forced to use Edge Chromium if it's other browsers we prefer. It should be optional, not required. Now, Windows tries to do the update, but can't complete it and I have to install other updates manually.

Thank you so much! I was in a update install/uninstall loop thanks to this. Was getting 0x800f0922.

Somewhere it was suggested that the EFI partition was too small (mine was 100MB) and it was a hassle to increase it, just to find out that that really was not the issue... but few empty directories :D

Thank you. I've been trying to get the updates to install for weeks and couldn't figure out why I kept getting errors until I remembered that I had uninstalled Edge and wondered if that was the problem. I followed your instructions and the updates installed correctly. But now, Edge is installed again. Bah! I'm going to uninstall it again and save these instructions for the next time a Windows Update refuses to install.

I am accepting this answer as it explains what has happened. I do not accept this as a solution.
The Microsoft Update system needs to be fixed. People should not have to follow some convoluted set of instructions in order to have the update applied successfully. I believe Microsoft is fixing this. Again, month after month, I find myself deferring updates and patiently waiting til issues get fixed.

i was optimistic this might work...bur once i tried entering either of the REN sommands i got ACCESS IS DENIED...so still cant instyall it ill keep looking i cant believe itsbeen a year

This is what just worked for me.

My Edge browser was uninstalled so I downloaded the setup here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge
After installing, I opened command prompt with Admin Privileges (easiest by right clicking start menu)
Then I ran the following prompts:

sfc/scannow

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Reboot after completion, then install the update and reboot again before you can uninstall Edge again and be DONE. (Hooray!)

How did you uninstall the new edge after you completed the win10 update?
Is there a clean uninstaller package for edge, anywhere you can recommend? (including removing its registry markers from the regEditor file?

it's causing a lot of grief for new pc-users to force install Edge, @Jenny Feng . I am new to pc updating. I had an apple before. and don't face all these force installs. but need windows for my home office pc for some office things I do.

Can someone provide me with an option to uninstall edge fully?

In an elevated command line, navigate to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\<some version number>\Installer\ and run

setup.exe --uninstall --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall

Like PFM, Edge is all gone.

This is the temporary accepted answer IMHO until Microsoft fixes the Windows update process for May 2021. I found I did not need to run DISM but your mileage may vary. Either way I would do an image backup before applying the May updates. Consider settings Windows update to manually in GPO or through a registry entry in light of the fact that the last 5 months of updates have been hit or miss.

my system update patches that crashed only got pushed to my win10 update server (after the 10-day period to build ver. win10-20H2 platform update) so i missed the reverting back time line now.

Can someone pls update me if I can just ignore the KB5003173 - update, if Microsoft is still working to resolve the crash on legacy edge, issues?

meaning would there be a new win10-20H2 update that BY PASSES this (KB5003173 - update) which will work ?
or am I looking to go through reformatting win10 to OEM-stock now win10-(build ver 2004)?

Any help on this would mean a huge saving in TIME/Money, as i have to now finance storage media to back up my entire workpc, trying hard to avoid a second meltdown now.

Hi,
Since September, Microsoft has been force-installing the new Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 devices, but users could still manually remove the Edge browser if you wish.
You can still remove the new Microsoft Edge using the command line with the following commands:

cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application[latest_version]\Installer
setup.exe --uninstall --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall

If you would like to install Windows 10 KB5003173, you have two choices:

Manually download and install Microsoft Edge again and install the Windows 10 KB5003173 update again.

Delete the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge" folder and reinstall the Windows 10 KB5003173 cumulative update.

You can also wait for the latest update to see if this can be resolved.

You seem to have missed the point and error. A system that already has removed the Edge browser, refuses to fully install KB5003173. That KB update contains actual important monthly core OS fixes, which are now prevented from being installed.

Your solution... manually install our missing add on / optional edge web browser, then do the important OS monthly update, and optionally remove the unnecessary edge browser again. That's kookie talk.
