Update Problems 24H2

So I have had this problem ever since I installed 24H2. It is this update: 2025-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5058411) Install error - 0x800f081f. It will not install, it tells me to retry.

So after reading other message boards I decided to reinstall Windows from scratch with the ISO, not keeping anything. This was in Feb. Then the March update came out and it would not install, so again I redid Windows. When it tried to update after the new install, it did not update, on a clean windows machine. So I downloaded a new ISO and reinstalled windows. When the April update came out it would not install, same error. I am NOT redoing windows every update! It takes too long! So I just left it alone and let it retry and retry. Now the May one just appeared and the April one mysteriously installed, but the May will not. For some reason the previous month will not install until the new month has come out? I have even tried manually downloading it and doing the update. I get this:

Windows Update Standalone Installer error: 0x800f0838. I am not redoing Windows, only to have the same thing happen next month. So aside from that I have done this:

I have plenty of disk space:

I did this:

I have tried this:

Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all files and folders.

Restart the Windows Update service and try installing the update again.

None of it works!

The only things that seem to work are a new windows update from a new ISO. Or waiting till the next update comes out. Everything on my computer is working perfectly. I haven't had a single problem with any apps or games. Everything else on my comp updates fine. It also will install all the other windows updates, except this one. Like ones for net framework and virus updates install fine. Instead of a reinstall windows with the ISO, so we can have the same problem next month, is there an actual fix?

    Hi,

Thank you for the response. I do apologize for the inconvenience as well.

We just recently received an update that there is an ongoing issue with unable to install KB5058411 updates in Windows 11 version 24H2. Currently, a lot of customers are affected to this issue. Just to inform you that our research engineers are already working for a fix. What we ask from you is just to patiently wait for it to be fix. There's no estimated time yet on when it will be fix but I can assure you that our research engineers are working on it.

Since you already tried doing in place upgrade process then it should usually fix the problem with Windows update. Also, you have tried doing clean installation process twice then it managed to fix the problem however, when the next Windows update comes, the problem will reoccur. So it appears it is a bug for Windows 11 24H2.

    Hope you understand,

    Best Regards,

    Fordy B.

    Hello,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community Forum. Please accept our warmest regards and sincerest hope that all is well despite the situation you find yourself in.

I understand the frustration you are experiencing with the Windows update issue. The error code 0x800f081f typically indicates that a required file for the update is either missing or corrupted. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve this issue:

    1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter:
      • Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
      • Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
      • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.
    2. Use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool:
      • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
      • Type the following command and press Enter: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
      • Wait for the process to complete and then restart your computer.
    3. Manually download and install the update:
      • Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
      • Search for the specific update KB5058411.
      • Download the update that matches your system architecture (x64-based).
      • Run the downloaded update file and follow the on-screen instructions.
    4. If same issue then you can try to do the clean installation process on which it will remove all of your files and apps. This will reinstall Windows and remove everything including the drives/partitions on your computer. It would be better to make a back up all of your important files before you proceed with the process. This will require 8 GB USB and a working Windows computer.

Here's the link on how to perform clean installation process: Windows 11 Clean Installation

Please take note that clean installation process will remove everything on your computer. It is up to you if you will proceed with the process or not.

    Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

Really??? this issue ONLY happens with this update!

    Look at this https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/dism-restorehealth-stuck-at-623-info-resolved/ad24cdf7-fb2d-4de7-93f0-9baaf770437e

I also found this: "After an /AnalyzeComponentStore it found a number of reclaimable packages, so I ran the /StartComponentCleanup command. Check it's health again and suddenly it found problems. In my case a "photon" package (some internal Windows stuff) inside the C:\Windows\WinSxS directory that got damaged and needed repair.... It's called:

    amd64_userexperience-photon_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.26100.1591_none_faf85d9f2170dfcf )"

and after going thru all I also found this:

"I must conclude that 2 reclaimable packages will be there to stay forever. (until 25H2) They belong to the base version 26100.1742 and are extremely superseded. Can't be fixed or removed. Did it once (together with other 1742 packages) inside my VM and it messed up Windows 24H2 really good!! Only a new reinstall of putting a backup back will fix the damaged Windows 11 24H2.

    The 2 unreclaimable packages are;

    • [Microsoft-Windows-FodMetadataServicing-Desktop-Metadata-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.26100.1742]
    • [Package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~26100.1742.1.10]

Both packages has the status; "is a top-level package and is deeply superseded"

They are only visible inside the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file!! Proof? Rename the CBS.log file. Start a DISM /AnalyzeComponentStore command and after completing search the file for that status. Only those 2 will have that status. Those are the 2 unreclaimable packages."

So, something is wrong on the previous updates that is causing the issue on installing this new update!!

It is MSFT responsability to correct the problem and NOT ASK the user to do a fresh install !! it's a non-sense!!

in my case, the Windows Update downloads everything and breaks at 53% intallation process. That causes the the installed packages are corrupted ... then need to use DISM again ... it's a nightmare!!
