Getting multiple Event ID error 131 Device Set-up Manager

Hello all. I have an HP Omen desktop with Win10 Home 22H2 Build 19045.3693 and my wife has an HP Envy Laptop with Win10 Home 22H2 Build 19045.3693. I was wondering if users were getting multiple Event ID error 131 Device Set-up Manager and getting the little clocks beside my installed devices in Control Panels Devices and Printers that come and go. I have done everything from running SFC, DISM, Virus Scans you name it to try and solve this problem but nothing. According to one of the Independent Advisors here in the Forum it was being caused by Update KB5032278 and to uninstall it which I did and still no change. I do not know what is going on and what Microsoft has done but this is clearly a Microsoft problem and Microsoft needs to fix it. This will be the last Optional Update that will be installed on our computers unless it is a driver update. This does not seem to cause any computer problems but what problems will this cause later on if it is not fixed. This is totally ridiculous.

Don

UPDATE: The only way I have found to stop these error 131 and clear the timer clocks from my devices is to go into System Properties then Hardware and turn off Device Installation Settings and also cleared the Device Setup Manager in Events Log and disabled the log until MS gets this fixed.

    Hi Don,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

Thank you for providing an update on the issue you've been facing. Disabling the Device Installation Settings is indeed a workaround, but keep in mind that it also prevents automatic driver installations and updates. While this may stop the specific errors you were encountering, it's not a long-term solution, especially if you want to ensure that your system is up-to-date with the latest drivers for optimal performance and security.

Given that you've identified this as a potential workaround, you may want to periodically check for updates manually and re-enable the Device Installation Settings temporarily to allow the system to update its drivers.

The problem you describe may be caused by a device enumeration problem with the Windows Device Set-up Manager during system startup. Specifically, an Event ID 131 error usually indicates that some error or timeout occurred during the device enumeration process. This can be related to the loading of a device driver, a change in device connection status, or other system configuration issues.

Some Windows Updates may introduce issues that are incompatible with specific hardware or drivers. You may consider waiting and installing a future Windows update to see if there is a fix for this issue.

I hope this helps.  If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely

I really appreciate your thorough reply but this is not just happening on my computer but also my wife's computer and others in the Forum. This had to have come from the latest update because it did not happen until then. I uninstalled the update in question and did a system restore on my computer and wife's computer back to 12/1/23. Still the problem persists so the damage has been done by the update. This is irresponsible by MS and I will never install another Optional Update Preview again unless it is a driver. Thank you again for your in depth reply but MS caused this and it is MS responsibility to fix it.

    Respectfully,

    Don

Hello and thank you for posting. I would not count on MS fixing it anytime soon as they seem not to care as usual. If you would please file a bug report in the FeedBack Hub as the more complaints maybe the sooner they will act. You will probably see little clocks beside your devices in the Control Panel's "Devices and Printers". I did go into System Properties then Hardware and turn off Device Installation Settings to stop this madness however I will turn it back on to check for any updates to devices. I was wondering if you can search on anything in Settings as it seems I cannot. Thank again.
