Error Installing KB5001092 - SQL Server 2016 Patching Issue

Hi All,

Version - SQL Server 2016 Enterprise Edition
Current Patch Level - 13.0.5830.85
Target Patch Level - 13.0.5888.11

While trying to apply CU17 for SP2, I faced several errors relating MSI/MSP files missing and/or replaced by the MSI fix tool which made them 20 KB size in the Installer folder. I dug my way out of that by carefully replacing the MSI/MSP files for all patches that had been applied thus far on the server for SQL Server 2016.

So once that was done, I was able to move forward; however, the Database Engine Services (and as a result of that - Polybase, R, Replication etc.) are still failing.

When I check the log, it no longer has those MSI/MSP errors. The error log is quite huge, so I am posting portions of it here:

Here has a similar issue with yours, see below:

1.From full install SQL Server I copied sqlrun_sql.msi file to "WINDOWS\Installer". And then I changed the name of this file, according to log.
2.From SP2 update source I copied sqlrun_sql.msp to "WINDOWS\Installer". And then I changed the name of this file, according to log.

I suppose my error follows from wrong *.msi file in "WINDOWS\Installer" (from another version of update).
