I have gone on properties on the folder and pressed advanced and the Encrypt button is Grayed out. I have even tried two methods

Method 1:

  1. Ensure that you're logged in as administrator.
  2. Press Windows + R, then type regedit and click OK.
  3. Within Registry Editor, go to its left pane and navigate to the location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
  4. Locate NtfsDisableEncryption item. Once you saw the item, double-click it.
  5. Change the**Value data from 0 to 1,then click OK thenreboot your PC.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

If the issue still persist, try the next method.

Method 2:

  1. Press Windows + R, then type services.msc.
  2. Double-click on Encrypting File System (EFS), under General change the Startup type to Automatic.
  3. Hit Apply, then OK.
  4. Restart your PC. Windows 11 Home Version: 22h OS Build : 22621.1702 Please Help These methods have not worked for me at all

Hi, QOZ. I'm Robinson, and I’m happy to help you today.

Unfortunately, EFS encryption is not available on Windows 11 Home Edition. To use EFS, your PC must be running Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education editions. You can see at this link more information on how to upgrade Windows Home to Windows Pro.

    Hi,

I am having the same problem and I have updated to Windows 11 Pro. The option to encrypt a file is still greyed out.
