Firstly you should rerun the SQL uninstaller and ensure you have uninstalled all SQL components (instance and shared). Failure to do this can really mess up your machine.

It looks to me like you had a previous SQL installation installed. You might have partially uninstalled it (because SQL installs are actually 2 parts - instance specific and shared). It looks to me like you just deleted some of the installed components without uninstalling and now SQL cannot install because it wants to update/uninstall older stuff and it can't because they don't exist anymore. At this point your machine is messed up.

When uninstalling SQL you should always uninstall any per-instance components first such as a SQL2017 instance including the DB, SSIS, etc. Then if you don't want any SQL components you need to run the uninstall again and choose to uninstall the shared components (client connectivity, SMO, etc). You should never manually delete SQL folders or registry entries until you are sure all SQL components have been uninstalled.

After uninstalling everything you can (except for commonly shared things like SQL object types which are fine as is) try again. If it still fails the only remaining recourse is to manually go into registry and remove SQL registry entries to get it to the point where SQL can install again.

In the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\150\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20210601_143508\ there should be plenty of log files. One of them may tell us which file that is missing. Details.txt is probably the best one to start with.

These files are very verbose - and yet, it is not always possible to say for sure why Setup failed.

Hi @Stef Van der Straeten ,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

You could follow below steps to delete the left components and then reinstall SQL Server:

    1. Uninstall the existing SQL Server and all the components from the add remove program.
    2. Backup the registry.
    3. Delete the following keys using regedit:
      --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
      --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
    4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server.
    5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing SQL Server.
    6. Rename all the SQL Server folders in the computer.
    7. Reboot the machine.

If there have any errors when you reinstall SQL Server, please provide more error details from Details.txt(%programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\nnn\Setup Bootstrap\Log\YYYYMMDD_hhmmss)

    Best regards,
    Carrin
