Task Manager is only showing only half of my cores and logical processors.

Hi, I just upgraded my CPU from an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 to an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400. It has 4 cores and 4 threads, but task manager only shows half of those. It says 2 cores instead of 4 and 2 logical processors instead of 4. I need help on how to fix this.

I also checked the specs on the Intel website.

    Hi WaffleKing478,

Good day! This is Jhakesong an Independent Advisor and I will be happy to assist you with this.

I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience. See if this helps.

    Check the setting in msconfig:

    1. Press Windows key + R
    2. Type msconfig
    3. Click Boot
    4. Click the Advanced Options button
    5. Make sure that there is no check for the box "Number of processors"
    6. If it was previously checked and you removed it, reboot your computer.
    7. See task manager again and check if it has all your cores displaying now.

Let me know how it goes. Have a great day!

    • Same result if you run - https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html  - (the classic version is good enough) ?
    • If you change the graph in Task Manager to Logical Processors does it still show only two cores (R\click on graph > Change Graph To) ?
    • BIOS should also show four physical cores.
    • You often need to update the BIOS when switching to another cpu. Re installing the last available BIOS if no newer one is available may also help.

There could also be an issue due to there being no dedicated Win10 chipset\cpu drivers for Win10 for whatever motherboard you are using

(no mobo of that vintage would have Win10 drivers).

As Win10 has changed over the years, hardware released in 2007 is becomming increasingly less compatible with Win10, and upgrades

such as this become more risky.

The same result occurs if I use CPUID. And task manager only shows 2 cores when I change it to logical processors. And my BIOS is from 2009, but whenever I try and install the latest BIOS from 2015 it doesn't work. If there isn't support for windows 10 drivers, then will downgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 7 work?

[EDIT] I checked in device manager it shows 4 processors, does that mean 4 cores, 4 logical cores, or 2 cores and 2 logical cores combined?

It only shows the option for 2 cores max, no option to select 4
