This might be due to a corrupted system files. Let's try to perform the troubleshooting methods below and check if any of the methods will fix your concern.

Method 1: Check for Windows Update

1. Open settings by pressing windows key + I
2. Select Update and security
3. It will automatically check for available updates, if not, click the Check for updates button
4. Install all available updates, restart your computer if necessary and check if it fixes your concern

Method 2: Perform SFC Scan and Repair Windows Image

-This process will perform scan for any corrupted system files or integrity violation and will attempt to repair it along with the Windows Image.

1. Open command prompt with administrator access
2. Type each command below and wait until scan is completed.

sfc /scannow

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Quick note: While the command is running, it's expected to see the process stuck at 20 or 40 percent. After a few minutes, the process will complete successfully.

Once you complete the steps, the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool will connect to the Windows Update servers to download and replace any damaged files in the local image for Windows 10 as necessary.

3. Close the command prompt.

Thank you for your response. Did you run the command prompt as administrator? If not, please run the command prompt as administrator then run the commands.

If the issue still persist, please perform In-place Repair.

In-Place Repair

• In-place repair/upgrade or repair reinstall is a process of re-installing Windows without touching any of your applications or personal files. In this way if there's any data corruption, damaged system files or missing system files on your computer, this repair will fix or repair them.

To start we need to download an ISO file of Windows 10 and save it to your computer. Please follow the instruction on the link below to create an ISO file

After the ISO is created, follow the instructions on the link below created by PaulSey, Microsoft Agent, on how to perform repair install on your computer.

This process will take some time to complete so you need to be very patient in waiting until the process completes. Once done , restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

Thank you for your help Jerico T.

After I sent my reply to your first letter kindly offering support, I installed the free version of AVAST virus software as I was told it is best compatible malware/virus product working with Microsoft.  This seems to have resolved the pop up window errors problem – Yay!  However, when opening Windows Security I see AVAST has taken over Microsoft defender security. Avast also seems to have taken over Microsoft web page when I open browser window. Any light you can give me on this with your Microsoft expertise would be gladly received.

Method 1: Check for Windows Update

I have updated quite a few times and get this response:-

There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later:

Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus antimalware platform - KB4052623 (Version 4.18.2105.5) -Error 0x80070643

Method 2: Perform SFC Scan and Repair Windows Image

I am the only user of my laptop and assume I am the administrator.  In command mode it shows:

C:\Users\Sue>

However when I type in sfc or sfc /scannow

C:\Users\Sue>sfc     OR

C:\Users\Sue>sfc /scannow

I get this message: 

You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility

IF I type

C:\Users\Sue>help

I do get a list of options but neither sfc or scannow are on that list

I get ‘bad image’ error code (0xc000012f for

C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MPR.dll

C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LINKINFO.dll

Thanks for the detailed update and I'm glad that your issue is now fixed. Regarding with your inquiry, yes, by default, once you installed a third-party antivirus software/application, Windows Defender will automatically be turned off or disabled to prevent conflicts and performance issues.
