System Configuration/Hide All Microsoft Services - hangs

My Windows 10 pc (ASUS Zenbook) has been running slowly in the last few days.

To diagnose the root cause I attempted the recommended approach of:-

  • In System Configuration, clear the Load Startup Items box in Selective Startup,
  • In the Services tab, select Hide All Microsoft Services and click Disable All.

But when clicking Apply, it does not execute - it just hangs the computer, which can only be recovered by a hard reboot.

Why might this be?

Thank you

    Hi Stephen-ML,

I'm Paul and I'm here to help you with your concern.

Try to use System File Checker to check and fix corrupted system files that may be the cause of the issue. Please refer to the link.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted.

    Hi Paul,

    Thank you for your suggestion.

I have run the System File Checker process, but it has not helped.

In System Configuration, upon selecting Hide All Microsoft Services and clicking Disable All, all the services lines become un-ticked, but when clicking Apply the System Configuration title at the top of the pop-up box states "System Configuration (Not Responding)" + the spinning wheel, and then I cannot access Task Manager to end task, so I have to apply a hard reboot.

My pc is running slower (it pauses before each action) and I believe this 'Hide All Microsoft Services & Disable All', is a useful way to diagnose the root cause. Can you propose other methods to get this System Configuration action to work?

    Thank you

    Hi,

We can't really tell what causes the System configuration to freeze. It could be corrupted system files, drivers,.etc. Also, this issue is very unusual so I can't find any specific solution.

But since you are experiencing more than 1 problem I think it is best that you try perform Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade to fix the system.

You can follow the guide from the link below.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted.
