Symptoms: while installing 2022-09 Cumulative update (KB5017328) as every update since June before that.

Installs updates until 30% -> PC is rebooted -> Installs updates until 35% -> PC is rebooted -> Error message “Something did not go as planned …” -> PC is rebooted -> Repeats four more times -> Logs into Windows, update history shows error 0x80240035.

Tried running Windows update troubleshooter, findings:

Problem with BITS service : The requested service has already been started. System.Management.Automation.RemoteException More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2182. System.Management.Automation.RemoteException

Running “NET HELPMSG 2182” as advised, reply:

The requested service has already been started.

After Windows update troubleshooter “fixed” this problem, the update continued failing.

Please help.

Eugene

    Hello Eugene123456,

Thank you for updating me with that information and I understand. I don't see any problem if you wait for 22H2 by performing an In-place upgrade. Feel free to reach the Community again for any future concerns as we volunteer members are more than willing to help.

Stay safe and have a great weekend.

    Kind regards,

    John DeV

    Hi John,

I’ve already seen this recommendation. I had not tried it yet since many people had reported that it did not work for them. Now that I have tried these steps, I’m joining those people, since the update reported install error 0x800f0988; this time PC did not even restart…

I’m planning to wait until Microsoft releases 22H2 update and then try update using Windows installation ISO (so-called in-place update) – do you see any problems with this approach?

Thank you for your time and an attempt to help me.

    Eugene

If the issue still persists, Please try performing an In-place Upgrade. It will definitely help in resolving update errors. Performing this can repair broken operating system files while your personal files, settings and installed applications will not be removed.
