Printing from Win32 application - new after installing 22h2 update

After installing 22h2 update we get this new and "annoying" dialog box in some programs. Annoying since this dialog box always picks up the default printer (we have many), so that you lose the entries made earlier. This dialog box only appears on certain programs, e.g. indesign. Does not come up in Office programs, Photoshop etc. Before 22H2 we did not get this dialog box. We see this is the dialog box that comes up when you press "shift+ctrl+p" In, for example, Indesign, we press "ctrl+p", then "setup", then this new dialog box appears.  When we pressed "setup" before 22H2, one went straight to the Printer driver's setup without going through this  "Printing from Win32 application" dialog box.

How can we avoid this dialog box?

Thanks.

    Hi Sumit,

Sorry to be hijacking the thread here. Thank you for pointing that out, as I had totally missed it. As stated by Espen Johansen, this has to be done every time we want to print. We usually do color proofs first, then the actual print run, on all the machines. It appears that this dialog shows up for every printer from InDesign now, if I choose Setup, just as Espen Johansen mentioned. I, too, would like the option to get rid of this dialog box as the default behavior, so I can more easily choose the options relevant to the particular printer.

I apologize to both of you for inserting myself in this discussion. I hope that I didn't prevent or hinder your progress in any way.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

I'm Ramesh here. Since you replied to my post, I assume your last message was directed to me. Anyway, you may want to check out a registry method I found that brings back the legacy print dialog in Windows 11 22H2. It works only for classic/win32 apps.

I hope you and Espen Johansen will find it helpful.

I am having the exact same issue. I am trying to print to a Canon 4000 Pro, and cannot get any of the original dialog options, just this Printing from Win32 application dialog. I have to print a few dozen large formats from InDesign, and I can't use the printer any longer, since this update. I can still print to the Xerox V2100 and V180 I use constantly. To Microsoft: What is the purpose of this dialog box? There are practically no settings in it, and nothing that pertains to the Canon 4000 Pro. Now I have to find a Windows 10 or earlier system that I can install the printer on so I can get this job done. Why did this even happen? In what way does this constitute an improvement over what was there before? I also just lost the ability to print to our HP Pagewide 4000, but I can just use a usb drive for that. The settings I need to access on the Canon preclude simply using a flash drive to print. I am on a serious deadline. Do I need to somehow roll back to the previous version of Windows 11, or am I going to have to reinstall from scratch, and avoid all future updates?

I apologize for my tone, but this is very frustrating.

I can still print from Acrobat and Photoshop, but I am using a lot of vector elements that I can't scale at appropriate resolution in Photoshop, and the colors from Acrobat are never quite correct.

I have edited this post because I was overly rude initially, and I understand that it is in no way the fault of the person(s) attempting to provide a solution.

I can't believe that there just another registry HACK that I need to do so that windows 11 can be productive... what horrible mistake from my part to updating and not staying in windows 10.

First MS took away the right click menu that had print right there (alongside other things I used) and have to make one extra click to get the old menu, then turned the taskbar at no text combined always view, another horrible lose of productivity as I need more time and steps to identify what window or app I'm looking for on the taskbar and now this is adding one more dialog box in between my programs and the printer?

How many more clicks do I have to do so microsoft is satisfied? This is horrible lose of productivity.

Thank you @Ramesh but you give a solution for a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place. Unbelievable...

Do I understand that this registry change only changes to the old "design" of this dialog box? The problem is that this dialog box appears. Previously, there was no such dialog box when you pressed Ctrl+P, and then "more settings"

    Before H22H:
Ctrl+P, "more settings", adjust in printer driver.

    After H22H:
Ctrl+P, "more settings", "this new dialog box which destroys previous settings", "adjust in printer driver"

Extremely unfortunate, and very time-consuming change after H22H.

And as mentioned before, this does not apply to all programs, but Indesign is one of those programs. Another Adobe program, Photoshop, does not have this problem.

Both Indesign and Photoshop are x64 programs.

    Espen

This is not driver dependent. This dialog box always selects the printer that is selected as the default printer. You can always juggle between printers, and set the default printer to the one you want - before you print, but the problem is that all settings made in "more settings" (printer driver) fall out every time you print. It is common to print a test, then print the rest - now you always have to re-enter all the options in the printer driver (that comes up by pressing "more settings") Before 22H2 this was not a problem, this dialog was not present. As mentioned, this dialog box does not appear for all programs, e.g. Word / office programs do not cause this dialog box problems. We would like to be able to remove this dialog box for programs where it appears. (ex. indesign)
