Windows 10 Update KB5012599 Failed to Install - Error Code: 0x800f0831

KB5012599 downloads 100%, then after a period of inactivity it pauses at Installing 20% for an extended period of time, after which it shows that it has installed 100%, but about a minute after that it generates the 0x800f0831 error with matching failure to install message.

I have spent the last 2 hours trying to fix this problem, including running the Windows Update Trouble Shooter plus a host of other suggestions, but nothing works.

Never had any issues with Windows 10 updates till now.

I don't know what to do.

Dont sweat it! Its happening to everybody. You can try this ---

Windows + R, type services.msc and click ok, locate windows update service, right-click on it select stop.

Search in task bar for C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution select all files and deleted them.

Go to Administrative Command prompt enter dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup This takes a while to perform.

When completed. Enter sfc /scannow when it is finished restart computer.

    After restart Check for updates.

    Hi Glutenus,

I am Sumit here to assist you with this question.

The error code usually indicates the previous package required for the update is corrupted. As you did many troubleshooting steps, let us try to find the root cause.

Run Windows update once and let the update fail. Immediately, can you please share the CBS.log file in C:\WINDOWS\Logs\CBS so that I can look into what is wrong?

Use any file-sharing website like Onedrive to share the file. If it is very large in size, put it in a ZIP.

    Looking forward.
