Microsoft IPP Class Driver only offers Grayscale and Monochrome for printer after Win11 upgrade

I have an HP ENVY Photo 7800. It printed color photos fine before Win11 upgrade.

Added new Ink and ran test page with printer and all printed fine.

Go to Windows->Printer Preferences->Advanced Settings-> under Color Printing Mode only Grayscale & Monochrome are offered.

I see this was listed as a problem by others after the Win10 upgrade but the diagnostic link offered for that solution didn't run on my laptop.

FYI- Also tried the following solution given prior :

  • FIX FOR HP ENVY 5540 All-In-One COLOR PRINTING
  • Go to DEVICE MANAGER / PRINTERS /
  • Right click on the HP Envy 5540 icon and select Update Driver.
  • Select Browse my computer for driver software.
  • Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  • Select Microsoft IPP Class Driver.
  • Click on Next.

I got the message 'The best drivers for your device are already installed'

I had the problem with the IPP Class Driver as well after upgrading to Windows 11. To resolve the issue without uninstalling and reinstalling the printer, I did the following:

    1. Click the Settings icon.
    2. Go to "Bluetooth & devices".
    3. Go to "Printers & scanners".
    4. Click on the printer in the list that you wish to resolve the problem for.
    5. Click on "Printer properties".
    6. Go to the "Advanced" tab.
    7. In the "Driver:" field/list, click on the entry that indicates the correct printer name (will show "Microsoft IPP Class Driver" before you select the correct printer name).
    8. Go to the "Ports" tab.
    9. Click on the entry that lists the correct printer brand/printer name (will show "WSD- ... IPP Port" before you select the correct port).
    10. Click on the "Apply" button in the lower right corner, then exit.

This may be all that is required, but I have always shut the printer down, did a restart on my laptop, and then restarted the printer before testing that the printing works fine, including providing the complete options when going to the printer Properties.

Good luck. Hope this works for all.

I’m having the same exact problem. Up until the upgrade everything printed fine in color. I tried changing to Microsoft XPS document writer it did not work. It’s still printing in grayscale in black-and-white

Cracked it! Stopped the 'removing device' procedure which had been going on for several days (!) by asking the computer to install a printer and it did it straight away (after a restart) and now prints in colour again. So it seems that uninstalling the printer, re-installing it and re-starting is the answer!

This is totally unacceptable that following an "upgrade" I have to trawl around the internet looking for a solution to the problem that should not have happened. We are not all computer savvy and now I an torn between uninstalling my printer and having nothing, or following other peoples solutions that I really do not understand. Whats the point of an upgrade that sends you backwards!

Just so I'm sure, you're saying to save the file I'm trying to print to a XPS Document format when you say, "...print file as XPS Document Writer and then printing it to see if it helps? "

Because when I do that, my docx file becomes a xps and the XPS Viewer that was easily available on my Win 10 version is apparently removed with the Win 11 upgrade. And as this link shows, Edge doesn't read xps files Opening XPS document(*.XPS, *.OXPS) in Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Community, at least I couldn't get Edge to open any XPS files. So after downloading and installing xps via Settings->Optional features->view features->add optional features->xps viewer ->install and open the xps file with photos -> print .....didn't work.

I don't know why I didn't do this right away but I'm going back to the HP driver. It works; all things print in color; now I just have to find where Windows insists on overwriting HPs print driver. Every time I log back in I have to reset the printers advance settings.
