I opened up my computer to get onto Facebook for my business. I received the attached message. I could not find this number anywhere on the web. I did shut down. I could not even find a number to call Microsoft to ask them about this. I appreciate the Microsoft alerts but I really need to contact tech when this stuff happens or why have it. Anyone else have this pop-up? Help! Hopefully I haven't done something wrong and lose all my info.

    Hi Mona

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

Well done for being suspicious, you would be amazed how many users fall for this!

This is a well known Tech Support SCAM do not click anything on that page and do not phone that number.

When this happens, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)

On the processes tab, locate your browser and end task on that

You can then continue to user your PC and browse the Internet

This is caused by a browser re-direct on a page you are visiting, try to avoid any page that jumps out to this sort of page . . .

All they are trying to do is get control of your PC, they will cause your PC to become corrupt and then require you to pay to have it fixed and even though you might pay them, they will not fix it!

Thank you, Dave. I did shut my browser down from the task manager. Just wondering how these things get through my Windows defender. I did a scan of my computer and nothing was out of the ordinary. Any suggestions going forward for protection? I did upgrade to Windows 11 and I have never had a problem before now.

    Hi Mona

Rest assured, that is not malware, it is just caused by a re-direct on some web page you are visiting.

You can if you wish, download the free version of MalwareBytes and run a scan with that to compliment the Defender scan, you can uninstall MalwareBytes then, if you wish.

It happened a few minutes ago again but with a bit of a different message and look. I did download MalwareBytes after the first time. This happened both times when I tried to open Facebook.

    Hi Mona Spence,

Sorry, I was offline, when you try to access Facebook, look at the Address bar in your browser, do you see the address change to something other than Facebook?

How are you accessing Facebook, is that through a shortcut or bookmark, if so, check that it contains the correct web address.
