Visual Studio for Mac has become unusably slow, how to speed it up?

I've been using VS for Mac for a number of years, going back to when it was Xamarin Studio. It has never been a zippy application, but I feel it has gotten even slower over the past year or so, and now I find it painful to use. Even very basic activities like switch editor tabs or scrolling in the solution explorer panel are painful. Some operations take inexplicably long to work, like showing the Git changes tab, or submitting Git changes; both of these can take ~ 30 seconds or more.

I have a top of the line MacBook Pro (Core i9, 64GB RAM, etc), so that should not be the problem. Does anyone have any hints for how to make VS for Mac more usable?

In the longer term I have some hopes that v8.12 will be faster according to the published roadmap, but it would be great to find some ways to speed it up now.

MSBuild is very slow. My CPU is at 5% for about 10 minutes. Is there a way to speed up the build process?
