Microsoft Teams Error 80090016 "Your computer's trusted platform module has malfunctioned"

Whenever I try to login to Teams I get this error, and it's really weird because once I was able to login but all my chats disappeared and I wasn't in the team I'm supposed to be. Teams used to work just fine on my computer until yesterday after I had to unplug my HDD and plug it back in (which shouldn't matter since teams is on my SSD). I have already tried clearing TPM on both windows and bios, deleting everything inside the NFC folder, disabling ADAL on the registry, rebooting, reinstalling Teams and some more. I can normally add the account to my windows accounts and use it on Outlook, but Teams just doesn't like it. Another weird thing is that in Chrome I can't access teams browser version (stuck on loading screen infinitely) but I can just fine in Edge. Teams mobile on my phone also works, I have no clue what's going on.

Edit: I don't know how but I managed to finally login. I don't know what caused it to work but I removed and readded my account to windows, uninstalled Office, tried again when I got the error on teams and logged in and all of a sudden it worked. If anyone has any idea of what could be the problem please answer in case it happens with someone else or again with me.

    Hello Volks,

Problem solved; but not with the above Solution.

Here is what worked for me:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a3cb96e0-2216-4e65-805f-9d1e7594890c/outlook-365-trusted-platform-module-error-code-80090016#:~:text=The%20error%20message%20%22Something%20went%20wrong%22%20along%20with,volume.%20Solution%3A%20Deleting%20the%20Contents%20of%20Ngc%20Folder.

in Short: Solution for me is to delete this Folder:

    C:\users<user>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewy

(this Folder is generated new when you logon again...)

but nevertheless i had a strange behavior:

When i logged on for the first time after deleting the above mentioned folder a WINDOWS Question asks if

my Organisation can handle my (Windows)"Machine" with Button <OK>

or with a small  Link Text: "No only want to login to this App".

If i hit the Button <OK> then i had the same Error Code 80090016... :-(

Second Try i hit the Link Text: "No only want to login to this App" and then

Windows is initializing the Teams-Window and Starts the App :-|

    Great MS...

I use a Lenovo P1 which I have switched couple times in last weeks as the computer was on repair. But I kept using same ssd in a replacement P1 (same model, same everything). And of course I got this error. But not when I started to use the replacement computer, but actually when I switched back to the original P1.

My account is fine. I can use Office 365, I can login in Teams and use some of its functionality. But I cannot use voice calls on the P1.  I can use voice calls from my phone installation of Teams.

The problem is obviously connected to dependency of the software to the underlying hardware; specifically improper/inflexible initialization of a trusted computing hardware. Reinstalling everything will help. Buying a new computer will also help.

And all because encrypting a video stream with AES or whatever TLS uses these days just isn't enough of security. No, you have to use "Trusted Platform" for no other reason than having a spying backdoor in the case if I join ISIS while I still keep paying Microsoft corporate teams account. Well I guess in that case Trusted Platform has some merit.

    Great job Microsoft. Great job!

Same Problem as USER otaviohenrique describes.

I have no chance to Log in TEAMS on my WORK-PC (other Office Apps and AZURE Stuff works fine…)

I do have a personal MS "PRIVATE Account" (which is not used for TEAMS) and my WORK-Account on my WORK-PC.

TEAMS LOG-In on my Mobile Phone works!!!

I tryed the "TPM uninstall" Tip + NEW-Start but it has not worked for me. (Same Error 80090016)

Then we tryed to LOG-IN on a "Collegue WORK-PC" (he can Log-in with his Collegue-Work-Account to TEAMS with no Problems) but with my "WORK-Account" comes the same Error 80090016…

Then we tryed to LOG-In with the Collegue-Work-Account on my WORK-PC:

    After Login: Message from TEAMS with the same Error-No. 80090016;

But -> when you klick on the bottom right-Screen Button, "TEAMS" is initializing the Window

and brings the TEAMS-Window as if nothing has happend…

The "Collegue-Work-Account" works then correct on my WORK-PC!

What other Chances do i have to fix this Problem?

I can not uninstall Office nor i remove my work-account from windows…

    Hello otaviohenrique baltrusch,

We appreciate your troubleshot skill and glad to hear issue has been resolved. Generally Trusted Platform Module (TPM) technology is designed to provide hardware-based, security-related functions. So if any issue occurs with system hardware, security, firewall and Installed Apps, it should be possible that this type of error message occurs. If issue occurs in future, suggest you to uninstalled the "Trusted Platform Module" in Device Manager or ON/OFF it and restart the computer. You can also try to create new Windows profile to check if it helps to resolve this type of issue.

    Thanks and regards,

    Ankita Vaidya

    1. Open Control Panel\Credential Manager - Windows credential and remove generic credential MicrosoftOffice16...
    2. Sign Out from Microsoft Office account from any office application
    3. Sign in with new password and issue resolved.
