SharePoint list attachments won't open in Teams channel.

I have a custom list in SharePoint online.  The list items include attachments.  The attachments open just fine in SharePoint online.

I am displaying this SharePoint list in a Teams channel.  When I open a list item in Teams and try to click on the attachment to open it, it does nothing.  I need the attachments to be able to open in Teams.  Note:  it DOES download to my downloads folder, but does not auto-launch the system to open the attachment.

I have already updated the following settings and it did NOT resolve the issue:

  • Click the gear icon to open Settings, and then click Site settings.
  • Click Site collection features. If the Site collection features option isn't present, you must first click Go to top level site settings.
  • Locate the Open Documents in Client Applications by Default feature in the list, and then click Activate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Hi Crystal,

Welcome to community forum. It’s my pleasure to assist you.

To deliver better service, we tested at our end but we couldn’t reproduce your scenario. In our test, we first add the SharePoint tab in a Teams channel and then paste the URL of a list. One of the items includes an attachment. It’s available for us to click the item name and open the document on Word for the Web as the screenshot shown below.

(add the list to Teams channel)

(add attachment in list in SharePoint)

(view the attachment in channel in Teams)

    (able to open it )

If you followed the same steps but still encountered the issue, would you mind sharing the information below to help us narrow it down?

    1. Will this issue happen to all files?
    2. Will this issue happen to all lists?
    3. If there are some colleagues nearby, will they meet the same issue?
    4. We noticed that you mentioned [it does nothing], do you mean you click the attachments without any responding? Or did you meet any error messages? If so, would you mind providing us a related screenshot for a better understanding? You could click this icon to upload the image.

If we misunderstand your concern or you need further help, you could post back at your convenience. We truly hope you are all well during this period, please stay safe and take care.

    Best Regards,

    Sandro

    Hi Sandro,

I have the same problem with openning attachments.

I build a flow that creates a record in sharepoint list (with attachments) and from that record creates a task in planner that is displayed in teams channel.

When I open the task in teams and click on the attachement link (pdf, docx, xlsx) there is no problem with opening them, but they are opening in microsoft edge as a new page.

But when I click on the .jpg or .png attachement the same way teams is opening it internally and it fails, but when I click the option "open in new page" it works.

How to solve this to get the teams display attachement internally?

    Hi,

I'm also having the same problem and have been trying to find some explanation somewhere online for weeks now.  Did you get anywhere with this Tomasz?

It seems like Teams treats Image URLs differently.

    Thanks,

    Éilis

Hi Eilis, unfortunately I haven't found a solution or explanation. I've started using this flow with this limitation for a month and observed that sometimes .jpg and .png are attached the way that allows to open them internally in teams. And I've no idea why for some cases it works and for another no.
