Whatever happened to the Python IDE?

Everyone is talking about Python in a cell, but no one says a thing about the IDE. Was it dropped as a feature? I remember months ago all the screen shots of what the IDE was going to look like and the new menu items on the Developer tab, but there's been no word for many months. That's the main reason I joined the beta program.

I was an SDE on the VB and VS teams back in he late 90s and early 2000s. I have a ton of VBA code I want to convert to Python so I can test the new IDE and help ensure a successful release.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

It seems like you are looking for Python IDE. As Python in Excel is currently in preview for Beta Channel Office Insider. If IDE will soon to be available or is available in future update of Excel, you may send a suggestion for this to Excel Team.

For the meantime, you can check this link for free IDE - Visual Studio Python IDE - Python Development Tools for Windows (microsoft.com) for your test or conversion of VBA Code to Python.

I'm confused. I thought I was part of the preview for Beta Channel Office Insider, or whatever it's caused. I used to be involved in developer's beta discussions for Office developers, including the Python IDE. That's why at one time I even saw the screen shots of the design plans. But then all conversation stopped. That's the crux of my question. what happened? Did my account get changed? I will check out your Visual Studio link suggestion, but I sure would like to get back the the conversations I used to be involve in.

I just received another message from you saying that I haven't responded to your previous message. I just want you to know that I only received your previous message a few minutes ago even though I see it's dated 3 days ago. I'm not sure the reason it was delayed, but I'm on here every day and try to respond do all messages as soon as I get them. Maybe it's because I'm located in the Philippines, but I can't imagine why that would trigger a delay.

I've spent the last hour or so exploring Visual Studio Python IDE - Python Development Tools for Windows (microsoft.com), and I don't think it will work for my needs, but it was a great suggestion. My concerns are not the languages, but with the office integration. I'm already proficient in both languages and know who to rewrite my VBA code into Python. I just need to test running it in Office so I can start distributing my programs in Office once the Office with Python version is released. I'm estimating it will take me about 2 years to convert all my applications, tools, and libraries.

    Hello Six Sigma Guy,

I apologize for the late reply.

We appreciate your update about your finding on the Python IDE. As we are a consumer technician, we would suggest you try to reach out to advance users like you on our forum - Excel (microsoft.com). This is because there are a lot of advanced users on those forums who can help you with your conversion. Who knows someone can advise you on how to make your 2 years worth of conversion to a year or months.

We appreciate your reply. Have a great day!

    Regards

    Kathy A.
