Hello David,
Thanks for using Microsoft products and posting in the community.
I understand that you're unable to change your laptop's volume using the keyboard keys (F2, F3, F4), and they seem to perform other functions instead. I can understand how inconvenient this can be, especially when you're used to adjusting volume quickly with shortcut keys.
This issue is usually related to the function key (Fn) behavior setting on your laptop. Here are some options to help resolve it:
Option 1: Try holding down the Fn key while pressing F2, F3, or F4. Example: Fn + F3 to increase volume
Option 2: Restart your laptop and enter BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, Del, or Esc during startup) > Look for a setting like "Action Keys Mode" or "Function Key Behavior" > Set it to "Multimedia Key First" or similar > Save and exit BIOS
Option 3: Some laptops (e.g., HP, Dell, Lenovo) have a utility app to manage keyboard behavior. Check for apps like HP Quick Launch Buttons, Dell QuickSet, or Lenovo Vantage. Adjust function key settings from there
Option 4: Open Device Manager > Keyboards > Right-click your keyboard and select Update driver. Also check your laptop manufacturer’s website for hotkey or function key drivers
Please let us know if these options help.
