If you have forgotten your Microsoft account password and don’t have access to the security information on your account, the account recovery form is a tool that you can use to provide additional information so that Microsoft can make sure that you (and only you) gain access to your account.

The following are the best practices we have seen from customers who successfully recover their accounts.

Before you begin

·          You will need a working email account that you can access so we can send you information about your request. If you don’t have another email account that you can access, you can create a temporary outlook.com account for free by selecting Create one at the Microsoft account sign-in page.

Note*: The email account you provide will only be used to contact you about your account recovery form and won’t be used for any other purpose.*

·         Your full cooperation, time and patience on filling out the form. This might take little of your time but its worth to do.

Fill out the recovery form

1.      Go to https://account.live.com/acsr and provide the email address, phone number, or username for the account you are trying to recover.

2.      Follow the images below to fill out the first page of the form and enter the characters you see on the screen to prove you're not a robot, then select Next.

3.      A screen will pop up asking you to verify the contact email address. Check that email for a message from us with the security code, enter that code, then select Verify.

Note*: If you’re having hard time receiving the security code to your alternate email account, check this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12428*

4.      Follow the image below to completely fill out the account recovery form, once done click Next.

5.      Continue to follow the images below and select the Next button.

6.      If you made a Microsoft purchase before, please provide your billing information and select Next.

7.  If you used Xbox, please follow the images below and select Next.

  1. Select the console and click Next.

9. Enter your Xbox Gamertag and Console ID then select Next.

  1. Once you submitted all the information for your affected Microsoft account. You will receive the notification below:

After you submitted the form:

  • We'll send the results of your recovery request to the email address you gave us in the form. This can take up to24 hours because our support team reviews the forms that have guesses or almost-right answers.
  • If your recovery request is accepted, we'll send youinstructions to recover your account. After you get back in to your account, make sure you set up recovery information like active alternate email address/phone number or authenticator app to help prevent this from happening again.
  • If your request was denied, you can keep trying up totwo times per day. If you don't remember enough information to successfully recover your account, you'll have to create a new one. To protect everyone's privacy, our support agents can't see your account details or unlock accounts.

Additional helpful tips:

  • Answer as many questions as you can.
  • Use the information you provided when you created the account, or last updated it.
  • Submit the form from a computer you frequently use.
  • You will be asked to list recently used email addresses and the subject lines from recent emails. Ask for help from family members, friends, or business contacts to confirm their email addresses and tell you the subject lines of the last three emails they sent you.
  • Make sure to use the correct domain for your account, such as hotmail.com, live.com, or outlook.com. Keep in mind that your email address may be country specific. For example, if you created your account in Sweden, your domain would be “hotmail.co.se” rather than “hotmail.com”.
