How does the Microsoft authenticator application work with MFA?
Does this requires a constant internet connection or only when MFA is enabled?
Can I perform 2 factor authentication without an internet or wifi connection?

    Hi,

    Greetings!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

You can sign in to your personal or work/school Microsoft account without using a password. You’ll use a fingerprint, face recognition, or a PIN for security.

    1. The authenticator app is a secure and convenient way to prove who you are.
    2. You can use the Authenticator app as a way to sign in if you forget your password.
    3. You can use the app to back up and restore all your other account credentials.

You don't need an internet access or cellphone service to use Authenticator app for MFA but you need an internet connection to set it up.

You can view some of the FAQ's on this link Common questions about the Microsoft Authenticator app

We also recommend checking this support article How to use the Microsoft Authenticator app | Turning two-step verification on or off for your Microsoft account

NOTE: it's highly suggested to add a 3 pieces of security information (email, phone number, authenticator app) in case you lost access to 1 or 2 of these pieces of information. This will also be used to recover your account in-case you lost access to it.

We hope this answer your questions.

    Sincerely,

    Leonardo_Y
