Problems Extracting .zip files

Question

I'm not able to unzip a zip file.  I've tried using the "Right Click; Extract All" and also tried "Selecting  & Dragging" the individual compressed files out of the xxx.zip compressed folder/file, like the MS HELP says to do, but neither works.  There's no error messages, just nothing happens.  What's blocking the unzip/extraction from happening?

Right-click a file or folder with multiple files in it, point at Send To, then select Compressed (zipped) Folder.

Windows Vista will compress (zip) the file or folder and save the new zipped file in the same place as the original file.

Unzip (Uncompress) Files and Folders

You can unzip a file a few different ways.

Double-click the Zipped File

The easiest way to unzip a file is to double-click it.  A window with the zipped files contents will open.  You can click Extract all files or drag the files out of the window to the desired location (example: the desktop).

If you choose to click extract all files, the files will be extracted (unzipped) in the same location as the original file unless you specify a location in the Select a Destination and Extract Files box that appears when you choose to extract them.

Right-click the Zipped File

Right-click the zipped file and select Extract all.  The Select a Destination and Extract Files window will open and let you choose if you want to save the files in the same location as the original zipped file or you can choose where you want to save the unzipped files by clicking browse and choosing a new location.

When I download a zip file instead of the file appearing as a zipped folder it looks like a "Windows Live Photo Gallery" icon and doesn't give me the "Extract All Files" option at all when I right click.  When I double-click the icon it gives me the "Windows Live Photo Viewer" with an unable to open message. I know I can download zip file extractors but why can't I go back to what I used to do with the "Extract All Files" option.

I wish idiots would quit posting tutorials when the problem is obviously not a lack of knowledge about HOW to do it, but that the computer is simply not doing what is requested.  Also, saying "Here go use 7-Zip instead!" doesn't FIX the problem.  The problem still exists and Microsoft needs to fix it.

I use 7-zip. It is very good and widely used.
