If Outlook is not shutting down properly when you close the program and you're experiencing persistent issues, uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook can indeed be a viable solution. Before you proceed, you may want to try a few additional steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

    1. Close Outlook from the Task Manager:
    • After closing Outlook, open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
    • Look for any Outlook processes in the "Processes" or "Details" tab.
    • End any Outlook processes that are still running.
    1. Run Outlook in Safe Mode:
    • Try running Outlook in Safe Mode. This can help identify whether the issue is related to an add-in or a third-party component.
    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog, type outlook.exe /safe, and press Enter.
    1. Repair Office Installation:
    • You can repair your Office installation using the Office Repair tool.
    • Go to "Control Panel" > "Programs" > "Programs and Features."
    • Find Microsoft Office in the list, select it, and click on "Change."
    • Choose the "Repair" option and follow the on-screen instructions.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, then uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook could be a reasonable next step. Here's a general guide on how to uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Office:

    1. Uninstall Microsoft Office:
    • Open "Control Panel" and go to "Programs" > "Programs and Features."
    • Find Microsoft Office in the list, select it, and click on "Uninstall" or "Change."
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall Office.
    1. Reinstall Microsoft Office:
    • After uninstalling, restart your computer.
    • Reinstall Microsoft Office using the installation media or by downloading it from the official Microsoft website.
    • Follow the prompts to reinstall Office.

Keep in mind that reinstalling Office will not remove your Outlook data files (PST or OST) unless you specifically choose to delete them during the uninstallation process. However, it's always a good practice to back up your Outlook data files before making major changes.

    Best Regards, Shalom

    Shalom,

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I will work through them.

When I close Outlook & shut down my computer, Outlook does not shut down & I have to shut down the computer anyway. Maybe, there is a bug in my Outlook & I should just uninstall & reinstall?

    Thoughts?

    Joe

    Hello JoeVance1,

I'm Shalom and I'd happily help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.

    Here are some suggestions:

    1. Check Your Internet Connection: Ensure that your internet connection is stable and working properly. A slow or intermittent connection can cause delays in sending and receiving emails.
    2. Update Outlook: Make sure that you are using the latest version of Microsoft Outlook. Updates often include bug fixes and improvements that can help resolve performance issues.
    3. Check Account Settings: Review your Gmail account settings in Outlook to ensure they are configured correctly. Check the incoming and outgoing server settings, and make sure your login credentials are accurate.
    4. Adjust Send/Receive Settings: Outlook has a feature called "Send/Receive" that controls how often Outlook checks for new emails. You can adjust these settings to a more frequent interval. To do this:
    • Open Outlook and go to the "Send/Receive" tab.
    • Click on "Send/Receive Groups" and then choose "Define Send/Receive Groups."
    • Adjust the settings for your Gmail account.
    1. Check for Large Attachments: If you have large attachments in your emails, it may take longer for them to be sent or received. Consider reducing the size of attachments or using a cloud service to share large files.
    2. Disable Antivirus and Firewall Temporarily: Sometimes, security software may interfere with the email sending and receiving process. Try disabling your antivirus and firewall temporarily to see if it makes a difference. If it does, you may need to reconfigure your security software settings.
    3. Review Outlook Data File Size: If your Outlook data file (PST or OST) is large, it may slow down performance. You can try compacting the data file to reduce its size. To do this:
    • Go to the "File" tab.
    • Click on "Account Settings" and then "Account Settings" again.
    • Select the Data Files tab and choose your data file.
    • Click on "Settings" and then choose "Compact Now."
    1. Recreate Email Profile: If the issue persists, you can try recreating your Gmail profile in Outlook. This involves removing and re-adding the account. Before doing this, make sure to back up your important emails.

    Best Regards, Shalom
