This account is not supported in Outlook for Windows due to the license provided by your work or school

I'm not able to add my work 365 basic account in this new Outlook anymore. I get this error: "This account is not supported in Outlook for Windows due to the license provided by your work or school. Try to login with another account or go to Outlook on the web."

This is ridiculous that I'm able to add my personal Gmail, my personal Outlook email, but can't add my work account which my company pays money for. Now you want to charge us more by upgrading from basic to standard to able to use your new Outlook I see. I also noticed ads right in my Inbox in this new Outlook. Seriously? Ads too now? Well, it seems like you're very desperate lately dear Microsoft and using such enforcing brute tactics on us - users won't do good for you. It will have opposite effect in fact: Now I will tell my IT boss to switch to Google instead. And guess what? I won't be the only one doing this. You know what's your problem, Microsoft? You never listen and you never care about us. You just do what you want to do and it's all about squizzing money out of us while giving us worst products compared to other companies.

P.S. By the way, your new Outlook sucks and everything you give us lately sucks too.

    Hello dean03032,

Welcome to Microsoft Community, we are glad to assist you here.

According to the error "This account is not supported in Outlook for Windows due to the license provided by your work or school", it seems this account does not have proper license or your organization IT admins has restricted the use of multiple account in Outlook for Windows due to licensing restrictions. Thus, do you have any chance to check the license assignment on this account? You can refer to What Microsoft 365 business product or license do I have? - Microsoft Support | What Microsoft 365 subscription do I have? - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

Typically, when you switch from Windows mail app to the New Outlook for Windows, the new Outlook for Windows will launch into the first account on your list in Windows Mail, you can refer to Getting started with the new Outlook for Windows - Microsoft Support. However, if you don't have a Microsoft 365 office apps license or if your IT admin set restriction not to add multiple accounts in Outlook, as a work around you can install Outlook PWA(Progressive Web App), after you install the web version of Outlook as a progressive web app, you can do things like pin and launch the web version of Outlook from your computer's home screen or taskbar, and access your account while you're offline. Therefore, you can install two PWAs for two accounts and pin them to your taskbar. This way, you can access both of your accounts at the same time without having to log in and out. You can refer to Use the web version of Outlook like a desktop app - Microsoft Support

Hope this is helpful, and please feel free to get back to us if you have further concerns,

    Regards,

Something's weird going on. I logged out from the new Outlook app and when I try to login, now I get the same error and can't sign in. I don't understand why, because I logged in before and was using it all the time.

I'm one of the admins there. I checked the subscription. That's what it shows me.

    Hello dean03032,

Thank you for your quick and kind response.

In this situation, please check what license does the affected account assigned? May I please confirm if it is Exchange online plan 2 or M365 Business basic? If the affected mailbox is assigned Microsoft 365 business basic only, this license plan doesn't include desktop apps, so it can only access the mailbox from Outlook on the web (https://Outlook.office.com).

Hope this is helpful, and please feel free to get back to us if you have further concerns,

    Regards,

They're all M365 Business basic. Okay, but then how I was able to login before? Did Microsoft make those changes now? I assure you that I had M365 Business basic all the time and I was able to login in this app, but now I can't.

Same issue here, I think. Main account is using an M365 E5 which includes the licensing for Outlook. The second account I'm trying (and failing) to add is on an M365 Business Basic license and I think this is the problem. If the account was a free outlook.com account it would be fine, but as it's an M365 account it seems to throw the error as that M365 license doesn't include use of Outlook. Obviously the M365 E5 does, and the licensing is per-user, so I don't see why this is a problem.
