Outlook Copilot requiring Outlook.com address?

I signed up for trial copilot this morning, and attempted to explore how it works beginning with MS 365 Personal Outlook on my Windows 11 laptop. I immediately ran into the Copilot for outlook tutorial saying it ONLY works with a MS email address which I do not have. All I have had for years is an @icloud.com address.

Important: Copilot in Outlook only supports work or school accounts, and Microsoft accounts using outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com, and msn.com email addresses at this time. Any Microsoft account using a third-party email provider, such as Gmail, Yahoo, or iCloud, can still use Outlook, but won't have access to the Copilot features in Outlook.

I then made the mistake of creating an @outlook.com alias, but keeping @icloud.com as my primary. The result was an hours-long fiasco that crashed Outlook, including refusing to accept my @icloud.com login and requiring I instead choose a Work or School account, followed by requiring Microsoft Support screen sharing to repair the damage.

=== Skipping all of the rest of prior edits here and going to the bottom line ....

The bottom line analysis and resolution is that the mistake was keeping my @icloud.com as my primary alias. Going back to account.microsoft.com and swapping them, making my new @outlook.com email primary was trivial. My MS 365 Personal apps all still sign in with the @icloud.com alias, with Copilot still showing and working for Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

My next step is to confirm I am correctly told that CoPilot will *also* work with my MS 365 Personal (not work or school) Outlook to manage my email -- even my @icloud.com email -- as long as my Microsoft account has an @outlook.com PRIMARY sign-in.

Stand-by.

    Dear wkrasl

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are having trouble on if Outlook Copilot requiring Outlook.com address.

Thank you for the detailed information, I was able to fully understand your question.

First, refer to the picture and link below. As a personal account, the prerequisite for using Copilot is to have a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, and Copilot Pro.

How to find and enable missing Copilot button in Microsoft 365 apps - Microsoft Support

If you have met the above conditions and set your @Outlook.com as your primary alias, refer to the 4-step in the URL, I think you can use Copilot in Outlook normally.

Regarding whether your @icloud.com email can use Copilot, currently no.

Of course, this does not mean that your @icloud.com mailbox will never have the opportunity to use Copilot. Be patient and wait for Copilot to be updated and improved. I believe that it will eventually be open to all emails.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

    Sincerely,

    Hardyjoe.J|Microsoft Community Support Specialist

I get what you’re asking about Outlook Copilot and the requirement for an Outlook.com address. From what I've seen, it seems like Microsoft is pushing for users to tie their accounts to their own Microsoft ecosystem, which can be a bit of a hassle if you're trying to stick with a different email provider.
