Outlook 365 crashing on Server 2016

Question

Three terminal servers all with the same error today, all using Microsoft Office 365 and Server 2016:

“The required file react-native-win32.dll cannot be found in your path. Install Microsoft Outlook again.”

“Microsoft Outlook has stopped working”

“A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program.”

A quick repair, a full repair, even uninstalling, rebooting and installing again didn’t fix the issue. On one server I uninstalled all of the recent security patches and rebooted, but no change.

I rolled it back to 5th December 2024 using the command below and it seems to be stable again:

cd %programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun
officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.18227.20152

Piotr,

I checked with my peers from Office and found that the OneNote issue has been escalated, and it is expected to be fixed in the February patch Tuesday updates on ~2/11/25. Hope this helps.

I checked the bug database and did not immediately find a bug for that OneNote error. I shared this to a peer in Office and hopefully they can help get it escalated. I see there is another forum thread for this issue, and they found reverting to 2411 mitigated the issue in the same way it helped for the Outlook issue, Onenote cannot be started - Microsoft Community (Outlook issue with workaround, Classic Outlook and Microsoft 365 applications crashing on Windows Server 2016 - Microsoft Support). If you can use this workaround in the near term, please do. If you have not opened a support case from the M365 Admin Portal, please do that as well.

The issue still persists for OneNote in versions: Version 2412 (Build 18324.20194) and Version 2501 (Build 18429.20132)
