If the cause of the corruption is due to not stopping the USB properly, then it makes sense that only one file was affected. The cache is FIFO, first in first out. You just happened to have bad luck that it was your diary affected.
You should be able to recover at least part of your diary. Unfortunately the file design puts the text portion of the file at the end of the physical structure, so it is the most likely to be lost this way.
You can recover the text because the new "x-file" formats are primarily text in a "ZIP" file. There are many tools and techniques that can help you recover some text. The following list is "rather" long and overwhelming. But you just need one to work for you. Look through them and find suggestions that you feel comfortable with.
Fixing Corrupt MS Word Documents
The most important thing to do is STOP USING THIS COMPUTER! Your best hope is recover a deleted version of the file. Every time you or windows (it does a LOT of writes without your knowledge) write a file to the HD you are reducing the chances of recovering a deleted file.
Recovering Word 2007/2010 DOCX Documents

- Try my open source/freeware: **Savvy DOCX Word Recovery**,**Corrupt Office Extractor** and/or**Corrupt DOCX2TXT**. Savvy DOCX Recovery sometimes recovers formatting as well as text. The latter two generally just recover text although you can try to repair the zip structure of the docx file with Corrupt Office Extractor.
- Try changing the extension to doc (Word 97-2003 format), docm (docx macro enabled format), dot (doc template), dotx (docx template) or dotm (docx macro enabled template).
- Use the **"Extract Text From Any Document"** facility in Word. For some reason in Word 2007 and 2010, this facility doesn't seem to work as well as it used to. In the hopes that your file is actual a mislabeled doc file try other text extractors such as BinText, TextExtract or ReadText.
- Try opening Word with the command line "winword.exe /a". This causes Word to ignore the normal.dot (default template) file and default preferences (in the Registry). If there is a problem in the normal.dot or Registry, Word should open and perhaps your file will open normally, as well.- Via hafizullah@techrepublic.com post.
- Use Microsoft's exhaustive methods: How to troubleshoot damaged documents in Word 2007 and in Word 2010.
- Using "**Open and Repair**" facilities in Word.
- Try to convert the text using a text/data extracting/converter service like: DOCX-Converter, Zamzar, Cometdocs, YouConvertIt, DocMorph, FreeFileConvert and probably others.
- Try the open source command line app SilverCoders' doctotext.
- Try the command line open source app by Sandeep Kumar, Docx to Text converter.
- Repair the zip aspect of the file with a free zip repair app and then try to open again in Word. Free zip repair programs: S2services' List of Zip Corruption Repair Specific Freeware and S2services' List of Zip Suites with Corruption Repair Features.
- Try opening the Word file in another Office Suite or Word Processor - Wikipedia's List of Office Suites and Wikipedia's List of Word Processors.
- Dave Taylor's innovative method for recovering Word document may only work with Word 97-2003 doc files, but I suppose it's worth trying.
- A long series of technical suggestions for recovering Word documents maybe not found elsewhere.

This last DOCX Unspecified error had to do with the <m:num> XML tag and I've had a few of those lately. Often, the <m:num></m:num> pair contains absolutely no content and can be removed without any damage to the DOCX at all. In this case, it was wrapping the lettersBH which were the numerator in a formula. The malformed section looked like this,

Now that XML code sequence passes syntax muster by Word still chokes on it. This can be proven by extracting the word\document.xml and opening it in Excel (or some other XML editor).
I first tried to delete the lower <m:ctrlPr></m:ctrlPr> section as it seemed empty of any actual contribution to the content of the DOCX but that still did not allow Word to open the document. Failing that, I noted other surrounding text so I could locate the problem area within the document at a later time (e.g. within Word) and snipped out the entire the <m:num></m:num> block. This allowed Word to open the DOCX.
I searched for the surrounding content I had noted previously and recorded the page number. I zoomed to 10% and took a screenshot of the first four pages and wrote my reply.

General Procedure to Recover data the right way
Although the article suggests a specific product, it also describes the best way to do deleted file recovery. The key point is that you should take some precautionary steps BEFORE the problem occurs. Or, have a second computer that you can use to do the preparation retroactively.

On my 100GB data partition it ran for about 1 hour and found 691 files, 450 MB, going back almost 7 months! I don’t remember if that was the last time I used a wipe freespace tool on my drive They definitely were not in my recycle bin. Don’t do first auto run . The interface provides lots of Filter criteria such as: date created range, last saved range, last printed range, title, num pages, editing time, revision number, file type, author.
All of the recovered files I looked at were properly structured.
