Error 1402: Setup cannot open the registry key UNKNOWN\Components

Original Title: "Error 1402. Windows 8"

I've been having trouble with my office 2010 since I upgraded to Windows 8, so I was trying to uninstall it so I could install it again. But when I tried to unistall office 2010 it gives me this error: "Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key UNKNOWN\Components....." how can I fix it?

I did some research and there are a lot of solutions but none in windows 8. In Windows 7 was with this command "secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db deflt base.sdb /verbose" but even applying it, got me the same error.

Thank you.

You may try the steps mentioned below:

Note: Back up the registry key before you modify or delete any key in the registry check the link to back the windows registry.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

    1. Locate to the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components. The 'S-1-5-18' key may be different on your computer.

    1. Once you find the registry key displayed in the error message under components, you need to provide permission for the key.

To do so right click on it and click on permissions and then click on advanced tab and click on owner tab and select the owner and click apply and then click on permissions tab on the same window and click on add tab and type EVERYONE and click ok and make sure that you click on full control check box and click ok, once you get back to the previous window you will find two check boxes check both the boxes click on apply and close the window.

    1. Once done try to uninstall Office 2010 and check if that helps.

Hi! Finally it's solved. I did what you told me but it wouldn't let me change the permissions, so I ended in this site: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/topic/51422-vistaseven-the-registry-editor-could-not-set-security-in-the-key-currently-selected-or-some-of-its-subkeys-error-fix/

With that I changed the permissions and install office again :D

    Thank you!

Thank you for the fast reply :)

The Fix It didn't work because of my operating system (Windows 8). So I tried the Method 4, but I got the same error in the first step of removing the .msi. Everything was working fine, I removed some .msi like Access and Excel but when I was removing "Microsoft Office 64-bit Components 2010", and Error 1402 appeared.

I just recently tried to install SQL Server 2012 and I got a similar error:

    The following error has occurred:

Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\1FA18F7974E099CD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\00004109110000000000000000F01FEC.   Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

    Hello Monica,

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Community. As I understand you need assistance to uninstall Office 2010.

    ·         You may run the ‘fix it’ from the below link which removes the Office 2010 traces installed. https://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Note: Ensure you have the product key and installation media for Office 2010 before uninstalling and if you are using Windows 64 bit operating system, save the ‘Fix it’ on desktop before running it.

    ·         If the ‘Fix it’ fails then you may follow the section ‘Method 4’ in the article mentioned below to remove all the Office 2010 traces manually in computer:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Follow the steps and let us know if that helps. If the issue persists, reply and we will be happy to help you.

    Thanks.
