How do I add a new user for a folder security icon.  When I click on add I get I get the screen below but I can not seem to add a new user.  I would like to add a new user name  that I can use on my 3 PCs so that can all of the PCs have access to the folder and only the 3 PCs.  When ever I create a new name I get a message that the object named cannot be found.

Please advise

Hi Neil. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

It needs to be a recognized Account name that already exists on the network or PC.

In addition see these latest fixes which are working for sharing after changes made in Version 1803:

Homegroup is removed in Version 1803.

What's working most for network detection issues caused by Version 1803 is here: https://windowsunplugged.blog/2018/03/27/networ...

Go over these steps to make sure File Sharing is set up correctly: https://pureinfotech.com/setup-network-file-sha...

There are Changes to file sharing over a network in Windows 10: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/409269...

    To troubleshoot sharing problems:

    https://www.lifewire.com/troubleshooting-window...

    https://windowsunplugged.blog/2018/03/27/networ...

This is the latest fix that's working for Version 1803 breaking networks. Please try it and report back:

    • shut all computer and network gear down then start again.
    • Try browsing to some of the computers manually, press Windows key + R, type: \computername, hit Enter
    • Press Windows key + R

    Type: services.msc

    Hit Enter

    1. Start the "Function Discovery Provider Host" and "Function Discovery Resource Publication" services, and then set them to Automatic (Delayed Start).
    2. When you open Explorer Network, enable network discovery when you are prompted.

If not then start over and set it up again: https://pureinfotech.com/setup-network-file-sha...

The issue is also being tracked now with expert help here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Thank you for the information.

You said "It needs to be a recognized Account name that already exists on the network or PC. "

So please give me slightly more info.  On PC #1 my user account sign in name is Neil and it is on my PC named HPEVNY.  I see user name of Neil (HPENVY\Neil) and then on PC #2 my sign in name is again Neil and it is on my PC named NEILTABLET.  I see a user name of Neil (NEILTABLET\Neil).  So if I wanted to use one of these what would I put in as the object name on PC #1?

Also, I tried several combination but it is not working and I suspect the problem has to do with the network problems you pointed out because when I open File Explorer and click on network, it does not see y other PCs.  So I will have to work through that issue in addition to your help.

PS:  Don't know if you are a Windows Insider but if so I was wondering if you know if the network problem has been resolved in the forthcoming release of Win 10.

Microsoft made changes to networking and removed Homegroup from Windows 1803 and that caused some problems.

To get you PC's to visible under File Explorer network section then most important part is to start some required services.

Push Win Key and type "Services", locate those services, start them and set Start type to Automatic.

    Services are:

       - Function Discovery Provider Host

       - Function Discovery Resource Publication

       - SSDP Discovery

    • UPnP Device Host

You have same username "NEIL" (and same password on PC1 and PC2) you can "NEIL".

Write that to this box and click "Check Names".

I am insider and this network problem is still existing.

Look more detail from my example with screenshots how to make PC's to show in File Explorer network section, change network profile and setup file/folder shares.

    Thanks for the information.

My wife's PC which is Bonnie (BTGXPS8500\Bonnie) see all 3 of my PCs when I open File Explorer and click on network.  Even though it sees all of the computers if I try to add "Neil" as the object name it pops up that object name cannot be found.  Is this part of the problem with the network since my other PCs do not "see" my wife's PC under the network icon?

You can add only those users who have user account on that PC. Do you have account "Neil" on that PC?
