Try repairing your version of Office, which should restore the appropriate file associations.

    Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thanks for posting the question. As I understand that you need assistance in opening *.docx with Word part of Office 365 suite.

    1. Do you have multiple version of Office suite installed on the computer?
    2. Is the Word application from an earlier version of Office set op open as default?

    Method 1:

    1. Right click on the word document ->click on Open with.
    2. Select Choose a program -> Browse to C Drive -> Program Files For Windows 8, 64bit: Go to Program Files (X86)
    3. Go to Microsoft Office -> open Office 15 folder.
    4. Select Winword.exe (Application) -> Click Open.
    5. Select the option Always use the selected program to open this kind of file -> Click OK.

    Method 2:

If you are unable to open the Word document due to File association error, then refer to the following link to select *.docx to open default with Microsoft Word:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/choose-programs-windows-uses-default

I hope this helps in opening word document with Word 2013 by setting word 2013 as default. If you need further assistance, reply and we will be happy to assist you further.

    Thanks You

There is no office15 folder, just 14 or 16

the 16 folder only has: OSPPREARM.EXE

    EDIT

after doing a repair installation (via control panel > programs > change office365 I was able to associate a .doc by clicking open with and selecting word2016.

    Microsoft... man.....

File associations in Windows only apply to locally installed software.
