display replicating and overlapping rows when I scroll or arrow up or down

Question

I have Excel 2010.  I've never had a problem, now, today, suddenly when I move the display in any direction, random lines start appearing multiple times and many of these like they've been "written over" what was already there.  Sometimes it happens with columns too.  It is the same in either normal or page view.  I have not frozen any headings or changed anything that I'm aware of.  Also, when I look at the row numbers on the left side fo the grid, they become out of order.  How can I stop this?

Hello MS Community. I've been a long time reader of questions and answers. Recently had this same problem.

I would scroll up and down with the mouse on a Excel sheet to get overlapping and/or missing cells. It was a total mess making work impossible. This only happened in full screen, never in a windowed screen and this was not an issue a few weeks back either.

I disabled Hardware Acceleration in Excel like some MS Posters mentioned, but this did not work for me.

What did work was updating all the Video Card Drivers. Since I have two vid cards, a intergrated graphics card on the mobo and a low-budget Nvidia card. I updated both. Restarted and things refreshed correctly in full-screen Excel. All this after hours of tweaking in Excel itself.

( I tried to update the Vid Cards through Windows 7, but Windows said my Drivers were all updated. So I went directly to Nvidia - http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us - and there was a software update available. So check sites anyway. fyi )

I noticed this happens in older Excel files which makes no sense to me because it was a graphics issue. I'm not sure why but that's been my experience. I opened up word, and powerpoint but they were ok. This overlapping mess of columns, text, and cells only happened in Excel for me.

I hope this helps others. If you find an Answer please try to post it. I've resolved lots issues just from awesome posters that follow up when they had already found their solution.

Nayana,

  My earlier response gave me an idea.  Because I suddenly mistrusted Driver Max, the 3rd party software I recently downloaded to use for updating drivers, I uninstalled it AND rolled back to the previously installed driver for my display.  I have checked several worksheets and I am no longer experiencing the problem.  Should I leave it well enough alone now, or try to update the driver the normal way, i.e. through Windows 7?

hi, sorry to pop in but i'd like to say that there is 1 way to properly update driver (especially graphics card):

Go to Nvidia/Amd... site at drivers section

select your card model and windows version

download to your pc

Run as admin / apply!

Sometimes checking the what's new / updates log etc may save you from trouble since many updates address very specific problems or games that may now affect you...

Dear Nayana S M,

  Thank you for your prompt attention to my question.  I tried your instructions in order.

More than one, but not all, workbooks are affected.

There is no choice provided for changing my refresh rate from 60 (75 is recommended for LCD)

  (Note: there is no flicker but the more I scroll up and down, the worse the 'overwriting' becomes.)

I recently updated the driver for NVIDIA GeForce 310.33, vers 6.9.830.0.  I don't remember seeing an icon for NVidia on my screen settings window (right click in background) before this.

I opened the troublesome file in excel /safe: same problem.

Does the issue occur with specific file or with all Excel files?

This could be an issue with screen refresh rate.

Ensure you have updated the Graphics driver.

If the issue persists even after updating the Graphics driver then open Excel in its application safe mode and check how it works.

To open Click on Start > in search bar type ’excel /safe' (Without the quotes and note the space in the command)

If you’re able to work with Excel in safe mode, then follow the steps below to disable add-ins and clear Excel startup folders.

To disable add-ins:

1. Click File menu, click Options > Add-in, click Go button in the Manage: Com-in Add.
2. Check if there is any add-in; clear the checkbox to disable it.

To clear Excel startup folders:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLStart (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLStart in case of 64-bit O/S.)

C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Note: Take a backup of files before deleting the files.
