Sharepoint Online moving some files between document libraries fails

Hey,

i have a few files which cannot be moved from one document library to another, neither with OneDrive and synched librarys (the files are in the destination library now in my OneDrive App but not on the sharepoint server) nor with the move command in my browser. The error message is simply "error", nothing more.

The files can be moved within the library without any problem, they can be downloaded and uploaded to the destination library without any problem. When i download the file, upload it in the same (source) library in the same folder i can move the copied file to the destination library

Where can i find information what causes this behaviour? I have migrated files between sharepoint libraries before and never had an issue.

    Hey Echo Du,

we are definetely on the right track. The version history settings are the same in both libraries but i made another test and deleted all old versions from the file and was finally able to move the file!

I attach two screenshots of the settings, for me it rather seems like there might be a corrupt version rather than a incompatibility with the settings?

    Hey EchoDu,

i would not focus on OneDrive, i used it only as another method to move files between two sharepoint document libraries

The two are both sharepoint document libraries and even moving the files in the browser does not work with the only error message "Error" which does not help ;)

Its a german Sharepoint interface, the first image shows the move and the second reads "one element was not moved" "error"

If i move the file within the document library it works and if i download it and upload it again with an altered name i can move it to another document library

    Hi @Tobias Haendel ,

    Thanks for your reply.

In my test, I can reproduce your problem.

Please check if there are columns in the destination document library that enable "Enforce unique values".

    For example:

    Source document library: Doc_C

    Destination document library: SPLib

    Thanks,
    Echo Du

    Hi @Tobias Haendel ,

Are you enable Version feature in the source Document library?

Does the moved file have multiple version history?

    For example:

    Source Document library: /sites/Echo/Doc_C

    • Enable Version feature
    • The Test_777.docx file has multiple version history.

    Destination Document library: /sites/Echo/sub/Shared%20Documents

    Thanks,
    Echo Du

    Hey Echo Du,

thanks a lot so far! Any chance we can find out why old versions might be the reason the files cannot be moved? Is there a known issue? Would be good to know for later file migrations

    Best

    Tobi
