    hi richard,

you can check out the file in sharepoint first and then open it in word client. therefore, you can open the document directly in edit mode and read-only notification won’t show later unless you discard check out.

    Hi Richard,

As “check out” does not fix the issue, Can you help us confirm the following information?

    1. Are you using Office 2016 for Mac? What is its version?

You can click Word on top menu bar > about Word… to find the version

    1. What is your Mac OS version?

You can choose About This Mac from the Apple menu to find the version of Mac OS.

    1. How do you access your files in SharePoint? Via open option in Word client or via open in Word function in SharePoint?
    2. Check if you can successfully edit this file via Office Online by navigating to the library > ellipses > ellipses > open in Word online > edit > edit in Word online.
    3. Check if the issue occurs on any other files in SharePoint and OneDrive for Business. Can checking out the file fix the read-only issue?
    4. Check if the issue occurs on newly created file in the same library.
    5. Does the issue occur when open local files in your drive?
    6. Check if other user has the same issue on this file.

Let us know if you get any updates of above questions.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    We use version 15.17

I have the issue when I open the file from Word and from Sharepoint.

I am able to edit from Word online.

It is not an issue in OneDrive.

It does not happen when I open local files.

It does occur for newly created files.

I have not set anyone else up yet until I resolve this issue.

    Hi Richard,

    Thanks for the updates.

Please first try the following steps to remove keychain entries.

    1. Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access and remove the following password entries:

    Microsoft Office Identities Cache 2

    Microsoft Office Identities Settings 2

    1. Search for all occurrences of ADAL in the keychain and remove all those entries if present.
    2. Restart computer.

If issue still exists, would you please check the following conditions?

    1. Create a new library in the same site collection. Upload a new file and open it in Word. Then check if check out that file in that library will remove the notification.

If the issue persists in step1, please do step 2.

    1. Create a new site collection in SharePoint admin center. Upload a new file to document library and open it in Word. Check if check out that file in that library will remove the notification.

    Regards,

    Ryan
