Sharepoint File Permissions

when i access my files on sharepoint from my laptop i get this message across the top.

considering i had permissions set on this file prior to uploading it to sharepoint how do i fix this?

    Is there anyway to change this? It may keep us from migrating our files to Sharepoint.

    If not, can you help me understand the benefits of this option?
