Hello, I am working on trying to get the Apriltags sample from the Holotoolkit to work with my current project which is MRTK 2.7/Unity 2020.3, are there any up-to-date guides on how to migrate this package? Thank you!

Hello, Welcome to Microsoft Q&A,

The Apriltags project was removed from the MixedRealityToolkit several years ago in favor of similar functionality in the MixedRealityCompanionKit's poster calibration sample. If your need isn't specifically for Apriltags and you can use QR codes, the HoloLens 2 provides in-box support for QR code recognition.

AprilTags support can be removed. For replacement functionality, the HoloLensCompanionKit poster calibration sample can be used.

I see, thank you for the clarification. I tried the QR Code reader and found that I wasn't getting very good results in terms of target acquisition, and using the QR code to keep my holograms stable after reading was difficult as well, as I experienced a fair amount of jitter. That is why I wanted to use Apriltags since I was hoping to utilize a simpler fiducial system that would hopefully have more robust performance.

If QR Codes are the preferred method, what settings do I need to tweak to make the target acquisition more robust? I had trouble acquiring any QR code that wasn't 100% directly in front of the camera, no more than 1ft away, and completely brightly lit. I was not using a small QR code either, it was a single code, approximately 6.5"x6.5" in size.

The MR Companion tools seem to be out of date as well, I want to try them but I am having trouble getting them to work with my current project setup of Unity 2020+OpenXR. Are there plans to update this package? I don't want to explore options that are on the path to getting deprecated.

Yes, QR code tracking is preferred method on the HoloLens2. For how to improve QR code detection quality, there some suggestions from Best practices for QR code detection and HoloLens environment considerations maybe worth trying. Besides, you also need to check whether your QR code paper is too glossy and cause light spots.
