BUG: Word Insert Caption UI Issue

Anonymous

When I click Insert Caption in Word, the box where I should be able to type in a label is too small to be able to see what I'm typing or what is already in there.

I can work around the issue because the box is functional, as in I can type in it, and what I type will show up in the caption even though I can't see what I'm typing. I can also add a label after I insert the caption.

I believe that this is a high resolution display issue (I'm using 3840 x 2160), but I'm not sure about that. I'm on Windows 10 (1607), and I'm using Word 2016 16.0.7830.1018 64-bit, which is part of my company's Office 365 license. I believe we are on the Deferred Channel for releases.

Is this the best place to report this issue, or is there somewhere else that's better?

Thanks,

Bobby

Note that if the Caption style has a right indent, or if it is centered on the page, the preview text may be difficult or impossible to read.

As you have found, inserting the caption and then typing the caption text directly in the document will work around the problem.

Resolution doesn't seem to affect it on that computer, although it looks fine on my other computer (2560 x 1440).

It still looks too small on a new document on the original computer.

I'm not on that computer, but I put the version in my original post.

I don't really need any assistance. I described the workarounds that I've used, so I'm really just reporting the bug.

    Thanks for everyone's feedback though!

    Hi Bobby,

Have you tried lowering down your resolution to 1920 x 1080? Check if you will be able to see the text you are typing on the Caption.

To confirm, you encounter the issue when you insert the caption on a table in Word? Verify if this happens to a specific document or a newly created document.

Also, provide a screenshot of the Office application version by navigating to File > Account.

    Thanks,

    Mike

This is a reasonable place for the report, although https://word.uservoice.com/ is better.

There are many dialogs in Word that haven't been updated from previous versions, and don't have expandable fields or resizable dialog boxes. I hope that someday MS will assign enough resources to do a thorough revision of these leftovers.

In a one-line text field like the Caption field, the text can usually be scrolled sideways to see any small portion. In this case, the best workaround is to insert just the first few words of the caption, click OK, and then add the rest of it when the caption appears in the body of the document.
