I use pivot tables connected to external data sources a ton on Windows, but it does not seem to be supported in Mac 2016.  I have version 16.16.4.  Looking through the forums, it just says it's not supported.  I see questions about this going back multiple years.  Does anyone know of a work around or when this functionality will be supported?

    Hi Spiltrock,

PivotTables connected directly to external data sources ARE supported, but not a fully as in Excel for Windows.

Office for Mac comes with an ODBC Driver for SQL Server, but if you want to connect to any other kind of data source you'll need to purchase an ODBC driver. I strongly recommend getting your driver from either of the following two companies. I have used drivers from both companies and have received superb support from both of them.

    OpenLink

    Actual Technologies

You can use standard data tables as data sources, but not OLAP cubes.

    Hi splitrock37,

Regarding using an external data source for a PivotTable in Excel for Mac, you need to use a SQL Database or have an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver installed on your Mac. For some detailed information, please refer to Use an external data source for a PivotTable in Excel for Mac.
