Microsoft Store Check Your Connection error

Hi,

I am using Windows 10 Pro and I cannot access the Microsoft Store. When I open it, I get a message saying "Check your connection. Microsoft Store needs to be online. It looks like you're not." Underneath this message, there is a button labeled "Check Connection", it brings me to the Network Status page under Windows Settings. This page indicates that I am in fact connected to the Internet. I found a few videos on YouTube that suggested the following:

  1. Make sure I am not set to use a proxy server
  2. Repair the Microsoft Store App
  3. Reset the Microsoft Store App
  4. Make sure that my system date and time (including time zone) is correct and not set to automatically update.
  5. Try the Windows App troubleshooting tool for the Microsoft Store app
  6. Remove and then reinstall the Microsoft Store app.

If anyone here can suggest any other troubleshooting steps I can take, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

I finally found it!!!!!!!!!!! did everything and stumbled across this registry entry.

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\AuthRoot

    DisableRootAutoUpdate

If the bit is turned on (1) it needs to be changed to 0. Once I changed it to (0) the MS store worked. So simple, I wasted so much time with all the other fixes.

    Hi John,

I spoke today with a colleague that had the same issue. He suggested I try the following and it worked ....

    Go to "Start"

    Search for "Run"

    Type in: RunDll32.exe InetCpl.cpl,ResetIEtoDefaults

    Check "Delete personal settings" box

    Click the "reset" button

    Reboot

... I think it is has something to do with the fact that both of us routinely use more than one microsoft account. I have what I consider my "main" microsoft account that I have used for years on forums like this, and I have a different microsoft account provided by the company I am working for. It is this corporate microsoft account to which my Power BI license is associated.

Hopefully this information might help someone else. I appreciate your help.

    Best regards,
    Paul

Hi, good day! I'm John Dev a Windows user like you and I'll be happy to assist you today. I know this has been difficult for you, Rest assured, I'm going to do my best to help you.

When was the last time it worked properly? Have you made any changes to your computer recently?

If you have a third-party VPN or antivirus installed, please try to temporarily uninstall it then check if the issue persists.

If you are connecting via Wi-Fi, please try connecting to a different network such as your phone's mobile hotspot.

Please let me know if you have tried the methods below.

**Press Start then search ""Internet Options"

    Select the "Advanced" Tab

Scroll down the list until you see "Use SSL/TLS"

Unselect SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 and 1.1

Select TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 (if available)

    Click Apply then OK

    Restart your computer

    **Turn off Proxy

Open Internet options > Connections > Lan settings

    Turn off "Automatically detect settings"

    Restart your computer

If it is already Turned off, please put a checkmark in "Automatically detect settings"

    Restart your computer

    **Change your network DNS

    Open Control Panel

Select Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center

    Click Change adapter settings

    a. To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click the Ethernet interface and select Properties

    b. To change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click the Wi-Fi interface and select Properties

Under Networking tab, double click TCP/IPv4

Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If there are any IP addresses listed in the Preferred DNS server or Alternate DNS server, write them down for future reference.

Replace those addresses with the IP addresses below

    Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4

    Click Ok

    Restart your computer

    **Reset Network Settings

Press Windows key+ I to open Settings

Select Network & Internet > Advanced network settings

Under the "More settings", click Network reset

    Click Reset now then Yes

    Restart your computer

Kindly let me know if this helps or if you have any further concerns.

    Kind regards,

    John DeV

    Hi John,

Thank you for your detailed reply. I don't know when the last time Microsoft Store was working properly because I have never had reason to use it before. I noticed that it wasn't working when I wanted to start using an app called Power BI. The Power BI installation instructions described two ways to install it. The first way was using the Microsoft Store, which didn't work for me. The second way was to download the setup file(s) directly, which did work for me. Interestingly, Power BI has a feature that requires you to log in with your Microsoft Account, and I am unable to do so. The error I seems similar to what I get in Microsoft Store, as if it "thinks" I am not connected to the internet when I really am. Here is a link to a thread I started on a Power BI forum ... Re: Can't sign in to Power BI Desktop - HTTP 404 - Microsoft Fabric Community

Regarding the methods you mentioned, initially SSL 3.0 was unchecked and TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 were checked. TLS 1.3 was listed as "experimental" and was unchecked. I unchecked TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1, leaving just TLS 1.2 checked. I restarted and this did not solve the problem. Then I checked TLS 1.3 (Experimental) and restarted again. This did not solve the problem either.

Turn Off Proxy <= this was already set as you suggested

Change you network DNS <= this was set to be obtained automatically. I changed this to use 8.8.8.8 as the primary and 8.8.4.4 as the alternate. This did not solve the problem.

Reset Network Settings <= I am hesitant to do because I have several "Network Connections" that I use for remote access into a few companies I am affiliate with. In addition to the Wi-Fi connection / adaptor that connects me to the internet, I have the following other network connections:

    Cisco AnyConnect VPN Connection

    WAN Miniport (L2TP)

    SonicWALL Virtual NIC

I generally keep these all disabled or disconnected except when I need access to the associated company. Do you think it is possible that even when disabled, one of these might be preventing me from accessing the Microsoft Store? If that is a possibility, I would be willing to reset my network settings. Before I do this though, I would explain to the IT support companies that set these up for me what I am about to do, to make sure they are available to set me back up again. I suppose if I reset my Network Settings and re-established these connections one-by-one, we could determine which is the problem.

Using a different connection <= I am travelling until Tuesday, and I am subject to roaming fees that make me reluctant to use mobile hot spot. I have tried unsuccessfully to open the Micrsoft Store previously while connected to two different wireless networks. When I tried with these other networks, however, I had not yet made any of the changes you suggested.

This is not urgent for me, so I can wait until I am back home on Wednesday to see what happens when I connect through a different network. I can also line up the help of the IT companies that would have to recreate my network connections if I am going to reset my network settings.

    I appreciate your help.

    Thanks again,
    Paul

Thank you for updating me with that information. It's possible that one of those 3 network connections is causing the issue. Let's first see what happens when you connect to a different network, and I look forward to receiving your updates.

You're most welcome and have a great day.
