Wireless unsecured network access problems.

I am trying to access an unsecured wireless network with W7.  My XP system works, however when I try with my wife’s W7 system to get on the network, it askes for some sort of access code (supposedly located on the router itself).  Why, XP never did and this is an unsecured network? (This router is not easily accessible).

      • no change, first time trying to connect to an unsecured network
      • no see above (works OK with another secured network)
    1. an old D-Link
    2. W7 shows it connected to the Dlink and says to type the network security key (but it is an unsecured network and my XP laptop connects without a problem and without a security key or password).

    Hi,

1.Did you make any changes to the computer recently?

2.Were you able to access the wireless unsecured network earlier?

3.What is the make and model of the router?

4.What is the exact and complete message you get while trying to connect to the network?

    Method 1.

Wireless networking: frequently asked questions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Wireless-networking-frequently-asked-questions

    Method 2.

Remove the wireless network from the laptop.  Shut down the computer.  Reset the router (unplug the power from it for at least 30 seconds) then plug it in.  Wait another 30 seconds then restart the laptop.  Check if you are able to find the network now?

    Method 3.

1-Click on any networks that feature a shield icon and exclamation point. These are unsecured networks. Wi-Fi without this icon requires a password. Networks are ranked by signal strength, so select the topmost network for the best signal quality. If you don't see any networks, click the "Wireless Network Connection" option to expand the list of networks. If you still see no lists, check your laptop's Wi-Fi switch and ensure you are within range of a functioning wireless router.

2-Click "Connect" to access the network.

3-Click on "Public Location" when prompted to identify the type of network. When you select the public network option, your computer restricts the information shared over the network, providing you with better privacy on an unsecured network.

    Refer.

    Hope this helps.
