Error:The file is locked for shared use

Split from this thread.

We are also experiencing this precise issue on a frequent basis. It is easily reproducible. We are also experiencing this problem when folks open existing documents and then attempt to edit properties. The issue seems to be occurring more often lately.

Specifically, we used to be able to create a new document, and if we clicked the library link in the breadcrumb at the top of Word Online (instead of clicking back in the browser, or closing a new tab) it would not lock the file for property editing. Now it is locking the file even in this case.

Is it Microsoft's position that creating a new document in a SharePoint document library using an Office Online app is not recommended or supported?

More likely this is a growing bug that needs to be escalated and addressed ASAP. This is a huge problem for user adoption, and for, well, USE.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for sharing your experience on our forum.

Based on my test, I didn’t meet the issue on our side.

I suggest you try another browser to check if the issue occurs.

Besides, you can return to Classic experience to check if you can edit the property.

If the issue still exists, could you please provide the following information?

    1. The screenshot of error message.
    2. Check if all files meet the issue.
    3. Create a new library to check if the issue occurs.

    Thanks,

    Qing

All files are meeting this issue, it is repeatable across dozens of libraries in multiple tenants (I know, because I have seen the issue dramatically increase). Here are the screen shots explaining the issue.

    This issue is repeatable:

    • using both IE and Chrome
    • across multiple tenants, in new and existing libraries
    • in modern and classic view

Thanks for you attention to the issue.
