    Hi Paul

    On your keyboard is an Insert or Ins key, press that, or press Fn + the Insert or Ins Key, that should stop that behavior

    What you are describing certainly sounds like Overtype mode. Press the Insert key to turn it off. After you have done that, click File > Options > Advanced and clear the check mark next to "Use the Insert key to control overtype mode."
