OneDrive for Mac high CPU after update to 22.012.0117.0003

After updating to 22.012.0117.0003 CPU utilisation became very high, and OneDrive keeps syncing, even when there is no new file.

It takes up to 200%, and causes fans to spin loud, and battery drain.

This issue has been plaguing me for months with no fix. Hogging up all 64 gb and maxing out my CPU on an M1 Max MacBook pro.

Microsoft will not provide a solution for this. But I do have one. Download and install AppTamer (https://www.stclairsoft.com) and just throttle OneDrive, OneDrive File Provider and distnoted process to >15% and move them to the efficiency cores. This solution will work with any Mac.

You can finally use OneDrive to go about your business DESPITE the trash update they have made.

It did not solve the problem.

I reset as suggested; after setup, OneDrive spent some time accessing files on the disk and the network for a while, and then it keeps "Processing Changes" keeping my CPU at >200%, fan spin to max and battery drains. But there is no application reading / writing data.

It was all ok before you changed to Files-On-Demand.

Same here. Sometimes it renders my MBP totally useless. It is very frustrating that Microsoft does nothing to fix this.

I actually managed to get in touch with MS support up to 3rd level support and the problem & resolution description was at follows:

    1.PROBLEM:

In short - Mac OneDrive app is full scanning even when not needed and if you do a lot of file sync - it's eating up CPU like crazy.

"Clearly, we've had some limitations and I want you to know that getting to the bottom of this is just as important to us as it is to you.

Unfortunately, this is expected behavior. I was able to repro it myself. Whenever Excel saves a file, it bumps the last modified time on the parent folder, which triggers a full scan on Mac. This is an area we're actively working on improving (by eliminating these full scans), but we don't have an immediate solution."

    1. "RESOLUTION":

This is the answer I got from engineering.

“we'll be working on it more next semester, we expect it to do be done sometime in that time period”

I added your name along mine on the item that engineering has in the backlog. As soon as we do have an update, I let you know .

In case we have a beta product I will let also know. you will be able to test and let us know the results .

To be honest - I will simply get rid of this and move all files to iCloud. This is the second week this year I am wasting because of some update problems. Right now the app tries to download all of the files stored online, I am left with 10GB on 500GB drive and it continues... Is there any way to stop this stupidity? I cannot choose the folders to synchronise because either the app freezes on the folder selection screen or error message appears indicating that I cannot do that...
