Can I set an expiration date on the sharing link to a file that I share with an internal member of my organization

Question

We are using SharePoint as our internal file share of organizational files. There are numerous people sharing files with others within the organization. Our audit department would like to set a default "lifetime" for the sharing link. This would keep the sharing of files clean when people leave the organization or no longer need access to those files because they change positions. I can see where you can set a limit of time on sharing with external members but not internal staff.

In that same regard, is there a way to report on what files a specific user has sent out shared links to other users? The audit team would like them to review this report to see if the sharing still has a valid reason.

We really need to have Microsoft allow the use of an expiration date on internal shared links just like that is available on anonymous links.

I am waiting to get access to the compliance center to see what is available for event reports. What we need is a report of all share point share link creation events that do not have a matching share link deletion. This would show us all active links that people can review to allow them to review the validity of the links and remove if appropriate. Do you know if a report like this exists?

Thanks for your valuable feedback and sharing an update with us.

The report included User Name, User E-mail, Resource Path, Link Type etc. However, if you want to find all links shared through the “Share” Feature in SharePoint Online., you can also use PowerShell command to get generated repot, here is article for your reference: Find All Shared Links in SharePoint Online Document Library

As per your description, please don’t worry we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation.

As you mentioned, “Our audit department would like to set a default "lifetime" for the sharing link” in SharePoint Online administrators to set the maximum expiration duration for items shared via anonymously shared links via the SharePoint admin center. Note:  Expiration date only works when sharing an anonymous link.
